MEGATRON

During the Great War, Megatron served as one of many generals under the command of Decepticon Supreme Commander Galvatron, each leading his or her own small army of underlings. After the mysterious disappearance of Galvatron and several of his generals, bringing the Great War to an abrupt close, Megatron surrendered to the Autobot army and was subsequently placed into stasis imprisonment. Freed several stellar cycles later in an infiltration mission organized by his former minions, the band of Decepticons fled Cybertron in the starship Nemesis, charting a course through Transwarp space to the planet Earth.

Megatron is highly regarded as one of the most ruthless and efficient Decepticon leaders in Cybertronian history, and fully believes in the Decepticon cause: power over compassion. What none of his comrades know, however, is that he fights with a singular goal – to rise above the rest and become not only supreme commander of the Decepticon army, but ruler of all of Cybertron. Manipulation is Megatron’s greatest tool, and one he uses skillfully. He cares little for his subordinates and would slag any of them in an astrosecond if it worked in his favor. A master schemer, every action Megatron takes is part of some larger agenda, most likely for his own benefit.

In his tank form, Megatron is outfitted with a powerful M256A1 smoothbore cannon with a range of 5 km, with an attached 7.62mm M240 machine gun. Mounted on top of the turret are a second M240 and a .50 cal M2 machine gun. In robot mode, the main cannon apparatus is affixed to Megatron’s right arm and retains full functionality. In this form, Megatron can swap out the typical M256A1 ammunition for a deadly but Energon-costly fusion laser.

Megatron's pretty unique among Transformers staples in that throughout all the incarnations of the character, he's never had a consistent altmode. Optimus is always a semi cab or a fire engine, Starscream's always a fighter jet, but Megatron's been - among others - a handgun, a tank, a starship, a car, a jet, and a helicopter. I chose to make him a tank not only because it slightly outnumbers the other options in frequency (G2, Armada, Revenge of the Fallen) but because I think it suits his character and position best - among a team of military vehicles, a tank is sort of the quintessential machine of war.

From a design perspective, Megatron's robot mode draws most heavily from his G1 and Animated incarnations; grey and red with a gun on the right arm. In order to keep him mostly white/gray, the tank mode is decked out in "urban camouflage", although I'm pretty sure that's rare among real-world vehicles (at least I couldn't find an example of this on an Abrams) His transformation is partially based on Movie Brawl's, with the turret separating to form the arms with the cannon on one of them. Like Optimus, the rest of the transformation is based on trying to get him as close to G1 as possible with a different altmode. For example, the rear 2/3 of the treads fold in half to form the lower legs, which allows for the G1-esque smooth, sloping black shins(which face inward in vehicle mode).

Character-wise, my Megatron draws a lot more from BW Megs than anything else (and I guess I should state now that Beast Wars being far and away my favorite TF show means it's going to have a lot of influence on Legacy). I hope that comes across in his bio - basically, he's not obsessed with destroying the Autobots or taking-over-the-world-muahaha, but rather obtaining as much power for himself as possible. And that means he isn't always actively being stereotypically evil, but he usually quietly plotting against the Autobots and occasionally his own side as well. I think that might make him even more evil. The dynamic between Megatron and his superior Galvatron (yes, in Legacy they're two different characters), who's a bit more like G1/Animated Megs, is going to make both characters more interesting, but that's a long way off...

Revision Edits (6/28/10): Cleaned up line work and shading a bit. Changed some coloring - hip panel attachments are now gold, and he no longer has yellow pupils (mostly just because it's inconsistent with all of the other characters). His helmet design has been tweaked a bit - besides the fact that the previous design was some crazy four-dimensional shit, I think this one bears a much better likeness to both G1 and Beast Wars Megatron. Consequently, he gets a new mugshot, sans giant chin-rubbing hand.

Revision Edits (1/19/12):Removed the asinine bit in the bio about the fusion cannon creating "ultra-dense hyperpolymers". Obviously when whoever came up with the term "fusion cannon" did so, they were thinking of nuclear fusion and not... whatever the hell I was talking about. The only major change to the design is the darkening of Megatron's medium gray and red. Not only does it look a little more sinister, it also helps to offset the medium gray and the light gray/white of the face and hands, which were a little samey before.

Next up: Bumblebee. Also unoriginal.
