Description Event: 2023 Loshenka Makeover
Phase Number: 1: The Pick-up
Horse ID#: 6499
Design Link: 6499

- Issues: Fear and Aggression Toward Dogs

- Description: After an incident with an off leash dog while on a trail ride at a local nature park, this Loshenka has become aggressive and skittish around all dogs. Even the sound of barking sets them off, and if they are held back from bolting, they'll rear and strike out instead. Even friendly dogs are a trigger, causing intense panic and sending this horse directly into flight mode.

As I drove my little old dark grey beat-up truck and my slightly less beat-up but still old white(ish) trailer (that I can’t believe both made the drive all this way) down the long gravel drive to Sagebrush Sanctuary I couldn’t help but admire all the breathtaking scenery Nevada had to offer. The sun was glistening in a warm amber onto everything in sight including the expansive fields that danced softly in the breeze and the stunning mountains that towered in the distance. I was so excited to be in this beautiful space for the next couple of months. I was finally able to participate in the annual Loshenka makeover event and was assigned my own rescue horse to rehabilitate!

After I made it down the drive and parked next to the other trucks and trailers, one of the Sanctuary directors came up to me and checked my credentials and then pointed me to a smaller pasture set a bit further away from the barn that held the Loshenka I was assigned. They also gave me a handwritten map so I could find the bunkhouse that I could stay in for the duration of the event as I hadn’t planned on bringing my assigned Loshenka back home to work with.

As I finally reached the back pasture and laid my eyes on my newest project pony, I saw this beautiful golden and white mare pacing and pawing at the ground in her pasture, just back and forth. The warm sun shining on her copper colored coat. Head up, alert and anxious while watching the barn in the distance. I knew one of the other participants in the makeover challenge had brought their cattle dog along, I saw them when I got out of my truck, and I’m sure that’s what this poor mare was stressing about…

As I looked the mare over she had deep ugly scars on her chest and her hind legs. They told me she had been attacked by a loose dog but I had no idea she was also physically scarred by the traumatic event… Despite her anxiety she was very easy to handle and gentle, just constantly on edge like she would spook or jump any second. Coming into this event I knew she was going to be a project but I didn’t expect her to be so scared... I hope I can help her… I think I’m going to call her Copper, she’s too pretty and sweet to call her 6499 for two months.
