I think you are right, it's also probably thanks to the fact, that their hips are usually healthy, tight, yet flexible, so they have to problems standing on their hind legs, or laying down with their hind legs fully extended behind them. Also, they are not stupid, and once they find out that standing on their hind legs helps them see better what people are carrying in the bowl for dinner... they can even walk like that

Yeah I actually taught Jun to slow dance. She puts her front feet in my arms and walks on her back legs while I move. She has no problems being like that at all. It's interesting.
