Description One of my latest characters to be unveiled.

Name: Dr. Dianne Cephalon
Age: 24
Likes: The scientific method, archaeology, studying, going on digs, clean labcoats, leather jackets
Dislikes: Recklessness, slackers, uncooperative subordinates, stupidity
Good point: Enthusiastic
Bad point: Short temper
Bio: Dr. Dianne Cephalon is a brilliant scientist who helps the young trainees with her expertise.  Though her doctorate is actually in archaeology, she's also dabbled in several other fields as well, like any stereotypical scientist should.  However, she's much more rational than the stereotypical mad scientist, even if she does occasionally get mad at the ignorance of her peers.  Also, she thinks the phrase "For Science!" is total BS.  That thing she's holding is a clipboard made out of hard light.  Oh, and for some reason, she still uses pens in a mostly digital age, judging by the pens in her pocket. One more thing: She may look like a thin, nerdy woman, but she's a lot more dangerous than she looks. She's a born fighter, despite her lack of military training. If a whack of her shovel or pickaxe doesn't take you out, her grenade launcher will. She knows hand-to-hand combat as well.
Guilty Pleasure: Conga Music

She definitely is a cool scientist. In a way, she reminds me of Saya!
And I like her backstory,

You really think so?

She is a bit different than Saya, too, though.  For starters, she's older than Saya (she's vaguely in her twenties).  She's a genius, but only really in archaeology, which I guess sort of makes her a bit similar to your Apollo.  Instead of being mission control, her job is to lead archaeological expeditions to search for alien artifacts in ruins.  She might not look it, but she's just as good of a fighter as Saya.  She mainly uses a grenade launcher with a fearsome bayonet on it to keep her enemies at bay, and without it, she can resort to using a shovel or pickaxe as backup.  And she might not have her own personal robot, but she does get to show off some amazing driving skills with a sandcrawler-like vehicle that she and her dig team use.

Her backstory might change a little when she actually appears in the story, but that's the basic idea.

Your Cephalon OC sounds pretty badass! I guess she is somewhat like my Apollo!
She sounds like a person not to be trifled with!

Aw, shucks!  And yeah, I guess she sorta is.  Personally, I think I have a few other characters that correspond to Saya more: Dillon is the son of a computer genius who revolutionized the way computers work in their universe, and he's picked up more than enough skills from his father.  He also wears glasses, but only when he's not wearing contacts.  Purple-haired spy Tia is spoiled rich, but she's definitely nowhere as smart as Saya.  Lastly, I have two aliens who fit Saya's mission control role, named Crystallina and Silverio.

Definitely not.  After all, she's not only an important archaeologist, but a mentor who must fight alongside the young trainees.  Even if the mission is supposed to be a simple dig that won't involve any fighting.

She appears in Volume 2 of The Baker's Dozen, and maybe near the end of Volume 1.

At least, you will be done with your book soon.
As for me, I'm not sure if  how long will it to take to be done.
I'm 19 chapters in and I'm still not finished.

I still need to do the two of Saya, and one of Saya and Kirby.  I also need to get the ones of both our Anitas and both Yvonnes.

You know, I think I like your liney style of coloring certain things like skin!

Maybe pens mean/do something different in the digital future? Maybe you use them to signify you're a scientist, but they still write, just in case?
Or maybe you pass them around as office currency? 'Cause you know how in offices and schools pens keep getting lost or borrowed or walking away, so culture evolved to accommodate that? I dunno

D-Prototype In reply to ToddNTheShiningSword [2015-03-25 04:58:29 +0000 UTC]

You really think so?

Okay, maybe I was exaggerating when I said my comic had a paperless future. Basically, they just emphasize digital writing more. Paper still exists, but less people write on it. Dr. Cephalon is one of those people. Also, the Resistance's base has a nice library that pretty much nobody visits except her. That's why characters like to say that she's "librarian hot".

ToddNTheShiningSword In reply to D-Prototype [2015-03-25 11:19:33 +0000 UTC]

YEP

And I guess you'd thought out why she'd have pens after all.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

D-Prototype In reply to ToddNTheShiningSword [2015-04-07 02:27:56 +0000 UTC]

I certainly did.  Oh, and she also collects them.  She has a special one in particular that can scan things, and store data that she can transfer directly to her lightboard (holographic clipboard).

And about the whole "librarian hot" thing... She actually does look different when she's not working in the lab or going on digs: sta.sh/017po4pe8fvz

Sounds like you thought up some good and cool technology for the... Baker's Dozen? ... universe to take place in. Sounds like it's like today's tech enough to be recognizable, but sounds like better stuff that's different also that people might want

LOL if you put this much thought into her pens then why does the description say "Oh, and for some reason, she still uses pens in a mostly digital age, judging by the pens in her pocket." Is it mainly like an in-joke to readers where it's not actually a joke but where people who just looked at the picture would take it at face value while longtime readers would chuckle at how all the noobs would be wrong and that this new character had to have a good use for these pens?

ToddNTheShiningSword In reply to D-Prototype [2015-06-03 07:25:51 +0000 UTC]

Actually, no. thb
I've just finished recuperating from being intensely busy over the past 2 months. Had to make art, and had to make money, otherwise the art doesn't get made and the bills don't get paid. And speaking of art and bills, I got some unbelievable assistance with bills thanks to commissions I got. So that means I've got some super important art to make. I've been on dA the whole time, but really haven't had any time for any art other than the art I was making. I haven't even replied to the Comments that art got, and now, throw in the commissions I need to make, and I've got a big backlog of stuff to do. I haven't even commented on the art others made for me during that time yet!

So here I am, getting back into the groove of things now. Is there a particular new thing in general, or in particular you want feedback on? I know I make things where particular new things are the main places I'd want feedback, rather than someone pushing through and just finding stuff, so I'd rather ask if there's a place/subject you recommend I start.

ToddNTheShiningSword In reply to D-Prototype [2015-06-24 01:10:24 +0000 UTC]

Well, things are MORE BUSY now, but now I have more time at least, and commented on some of that art that was made for me.

ToddNTheShiningSword In reply to D-Prototype [2015-06-25 07:19:01 +0000 UTC]

I also spent some of it trying to put out a few things that were super fast and easy, just to see how that'd go. Went okay I think. Now back to work on better things, though.

I don't really upload a lot of my sketches here, to be honest. That's why I've only got a few in my gallery, and more in scraps/stash. That's why the one of Dr. C in a bikini isn't in my gallery.

Well, anyways, I'm glad you like her. I already made a model sheet of her, as well as some of her alternate outfits (no labcoat, archaeologist outfit, pajamas, party dress, etc.). You might see her late into Volume 1 and throughout most of Volume 2.

FOR SCIENCE, Dr. Cephalon! !!  EMBRACE IT!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

D-Prototype In reply to Tigerach [2015-03-22 03:00:44 +0000 UTC]

I pretty much made her characterization as a huge middle finger to that mentality.  I basically deconstruct it with how off-putting it can be to more moral scientists who actually question what they do.  She was once a member of a mad scientist team, but their actions for science (like sacrificing both humans and very human-like robots as test subjects) led her to defecting.  And if she ever does embrace it, she's probably joking, since the most harm she'll ever do is breaking ancient alien artifacts out of rocks.  After all, she's actually an archaeologist, studying other fields on the side.

Tigerach In reply to D-Prototype [2015-03-22 03:07:57 +0000 UTC]

Oh, well that's a good reason.  That's actually a very valid deconstruction.

D-Prototype In reply to Tigerach [2015-03-24 03:13:19 +0000 UTC]

Glad you think so. I haven't put much detail into much of her backstory yet, but I'm just laying down some bare bones stuff. Also, for some reason, I guess I really like her as a character, and I feel like she'll be able to fit in just fine with the rest of the cast. She debuts as a main character in Volume 2, conducting a dig for artifacts before anyone else can get to them. Also, some of the guys think she's got hidden beauty potential-- in other words, secretly hot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tigerach In reply to D-Prototype [2015-03-24 05:59:04 +0000 UTC]

I like that--secretly hot.  I like to call it "librarian hot," someone you look at and think "he/she's probably super attractive, it's just that he/she never draws attention to it."

I would like to believe I am librarian hot lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

D-Prototype In reply to Tigerach [2015-03-24 19:31:42 +0000 UTC]

You know, I think I really like that term now. It also inspired me to draw her reading in the library today. And yesterday, I drew all her alternate outfits. Turns out she looks good in a party dress.

Maybe you are. But you're not a librarian, so…
