There are a million ways to die in space.

Micrometeorite strikes, explosive decompressions, busted air recyclers, radiation.

A seam on your vacuum suit pops because some underpaid worker was thinking more about the upcoming weekend than double checking their seam work during its manufacture, and it's an old used suit that couldn't take the strain anymore.

You can make a steady paycheck with one of the big companies, but the dangers are all still there, and it always seems that when the almost-inevitable happens, the company always seems to find that one thing that you did that one time where you didn't follow procedure, and so there's no insurance sent back home.

Or you can work for yourself, always hoping for that big find, because when you find it, the payoff is enormous. The five richest people in the system are all ex-belters.

So you go out every day, each day just knowing that today you will make the big score, and you never seem to realize that the five richest people in the system are also the luckiest. And you're not lucky.
