On our four day hiking trip on Yakushima 屋久島 in Japan with my friend NicolasAlexanderOtto we absorbed all the the magic of the ancient cedar forests which cover most of the island.For this trip I wanted to try out to sleep only in a lightweight hammock and therefore didn't take a tent with me, I guess reason was that I didn't own a lightweight tent at that point of time.
Fortunately I also brought a tarp for the eventuality that it might rain.
I'm glad I did, because after reaching our second night camp during a rain shower which has been ongoing since early afternoon I really needed it. In fact I was even too tired to figure out a good spot to hang my hammock in the midest of a forest, so I just decided to sleep on my mat next to Alex' tent.
Not only did I have a wet and uncomfortable night while sleeping in my rather extemporary night camp with only a tarp over my head, I also was haunted by nightly animal visitors coming for the empty peanut bag I just ate before going to sleep. A japanese hiker we met in the morning told us that one of those monkeys even made it into his tent and stole a full pack of peanuts.
After the sunrise it was getting warmer and the forest began to steam from all the rain that has fallen the past 20 hours, it appeared really mystical.
Before packing up we decided to hike around the camp to see Jōmon Sugi 縄文杉, it is the biggest and oldest Cryptomeria tree on the island, estimated to be between 2170 and 7200 years old.
It was quite an impressive sight to behold thinking about which struggles this tree has seen and overcome.
