[At least one good thing about this pandemic: when you're limited to walking or bicycling, you can revisit places and haunts you used to visit before you got hooked on long travels by car or bus....!]
A revisit to the CPR main line overpass over McPhillips Street, right where the Weston Yards to the west meet the Winnipeg Yards to the east.
Looking south as the rail cars of the outbound two-engine consist pass by me....
... some of which include a few former CN-leased Alberta Heritage Fund grain cars (pictured is ex-ALNX 396318).
Back when Justin Trudeau's father led the country, in the 1970s, this country had a problemβan obsolete grain car fleet prevented it from winning or fulfilling international grain sales. So in response, the Canadian government, together with the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta and the then Canadian Wheat Board , ordered 12,400 cylindrical hoppers in 1980 to move grain from Canada to port and then to market. At its peak, over 19,000 government covered hoppers, built by Hawker-Siddeley, National Steel Car and Marine Industries have been carrying Canadian grain on rails since 1972. Running all across the two main railroads, CPR and CNR, the majority of these "colourful" 4550 cu ft teardrop/cylindrical design cars have been owned by the Government of Canada or else the then Canadian Wheat Board (CPWX and CNWX), while the rest have been either by the Alberta Heritage Fund (ALPX and ALNX) or the Saskatchewan Grain Car Corporation (SKPX and SKNX).
In recent years, both the Canadian Pacific Railway and Canadian National Railway would come to acquire/sell off the vast majority of the government-owned cars (CPWX becomes CP__, CNWX becomes CN__), while the Alberta and Saskatchewan government would plan to sell off its cars to farmers' coops or shortline railroads.
As it stands now, if you want to capture for yourself a bit of "colourful" Canadian railway history, reach for your camera before they're all gone!
