Description This is my first fanart of Brackenfur and Sorreltail, who are the couple I adopted for the Adopt A Warriors Couple group! ([link] ) I wrote a little scene to go along with him! It's the prelude to the picture! I hope you guys like it!

"Wake up, Brackenfur!" Sorreltail purred quietly, rubbing her cheek against the older warrior's shoulders that dark, cloudy morning. She'd just returned from the dawn patrol, and Graystripe had told her she could go hunting with any of the other warriors if she had the energy for it.

Sorreltail was full of spirit that morning, and half the clan was still asleep, the gloomy overcast and light rain motivating them to stay in their nests. She knew that Brackenfur wouldn't complain about going out with her, though. The soft-spoken tom hardly complained about anything!

He lifted his head, blinking the sleep away from his eyes and looked up at her. He meowed, "Hello, Sorreltail."

"You're coming hunting with me," she meowed cheerfully, her tail high and eyes bright. "Let's go!"

Brackenfur watched her whisk out of the den, and his whiskers twitched in amusement. He admired Sorreltail's enthusiasm. He carefully climbed over Cloudtail and Ashfur, shouldering his way out of the den and into the heart of the camp. Sorreltail was with Firestar and Graystripe under the Highrock.

He padded over to them in time to hear Firestar meow, "...would probably be the best place to hunt right now. The rain it letting up, and the birds should be venturing out looking for worms."

"Where is the best place to hunt?" Brackenfur asked, dipping his head to his Leader and Deputy in greeting.

"Sunningrocks," Firestar answered him as Sorreltail bounded over towards the fern tunnel. The Leader mrrowed, "And you might want to hurry there; Sorreltail seems to have ants in her pelt today!"

"She's been looking forward to hunting with you since we left for patrol this morning," Graystripe meowed, nudging Brackenfur playfully. Both he and Firestar looked at Brackenfur in a way that made his fur flush hot with embarrassment.

He looked down and shuffled a paw, meowing quickly, "We'll be back by Sunhigh with freshkill for the elders!"

"Don't hurry back," Firestar called after him as he scampered towards the ravine. Brackenfur's fur prickled and he was glad when he ducked away from the all-knowing eyes of his friends.

Sorreltail was pacing at the top of the ravine waiting for him. He climbed up beside her and meowed, "I'm ready to go now!"

The she-cat cast him a mischievous look and challenged, "I'll race you to Sunningrocks."

Brackenfur looked at her in surprise. Sunningrocks was a bit far from the camp, and she'd just come back from patrol. Wasn't she tired? Besides, they'd scare all the prey away if they went charging through the forest like a fair of badgers!

"It'll be fun!" She promised, seeing the hesitation on his face. She wrapped herself around him, her body warm against his in the chilly air. He leaned into her a little without thinking about it. Her eyes twinkled and she joked, "I'll give you a head-start if you're worried about losing..."

Brackenfur straightened up, flexing his paws a little. He laughed, "I'm not worried!"

"Good!" Sorreltail meowed. An instant later she jetted away, streaking through the undergrowth as swiftly and silently as a fox. Brackenfur smiled and bounded after her, ducking around bushes and leaping over fallen branches expertly. He was hard on her paws within a few seconds, lagging behind a little as he carefully tried not to slip on the wet leaves.

Sorreltail slowed her run into a spirited jog, falling in beside Brackenfur. She teased, "I thought you were going to beat me, not lag behind my tail the whole way!"

"I haven't lost yet," he answered her back, eyes sparkling.

He could hear the river, and that meant they were drawing close to Sunningrocks. Sorreltail was distracted for a second as she looked ahead of them towards the looming gray mass. Brackenfur used this distraction to his advantage. He sprang sideways suddenly, barreling into Sorreltail and sending them both tumbling over.

"Oomph!" Sorreltail grunted as she slid on the leaves and fell into the wet grass, Brackenfur landing on top of her and squishing her like a flea. He stretched out over her and pinned her to the ground, his strong paws holding her firm. She protested, "You can't knock me out of the race! That's cheating!"

"You didn't say there were any rules," he purred, giving her ear a gentle lick.

Sorreltail stopped trying to squirm away from his grasp. She felt herself relaxing as she purred back, turning her head around to look at him. Their muzzles accidentally brushed, and a little shock tingled up Sorreltail's spine, from the tip of her tail. She didn't know how to accurately describe what the feeling was, but it made her heart beat faster and blood rush through her ears.

Brackenfur felt it, too, and his fur prickled with excitement. He looked into Sorreltail's bright, thoughtful eyes for a second. He'd never realized how pretty they were before now. Without thinking, Brackenfur stretched forward a little bit, tenderly pressing his nose against Sorreltail's. The gesture lasted only a brief moment, but to the tom time seemed to stand still for a while, and he forgot about their hunting mission as the forest around them seemed to blur. It was as if nothing else was there with him, aside from her.

The moment passed, though, and Brackenfur realized what he's just done. He quickly backed away from Sorreltail a few paces, ducking his head shyly. He apologized, "I'm sorry." What had come over him? He felt a confusing tangle of emotions tugging at his belly. He wasn't really sorry, but he felt guilty for making a move on her like that. What if he was nothing more than a clanmate to her? What if she was upset with him for what he'd done?

Sorreltail took a step closer to him, leaning forward until she could smell his deep, woodsy scent. She assured him quietly, "There's nothing to be sorry for," and then she quickly brushed her nose against his again before leaning back. Her eyes glittered happily and she meowed, "Come on; let's go sit for a while. The sun is coming out, so the birds are sure to follow shortly."

Their tails twined together as they padded onward towards Sunningrocks, emerging from the thick forest onto the grassy stretch surrounding the rock pile. Brackenfur was quite content with following her up as she started to climb to the top of Sunningrocks. He was just about to start following her when he heard a twig snap behind them.

He whirled around, jumpy and anxious. Was it an enemy warrior? Or had a clanmate come to join their hunting party? He detect any other cat, just his and Sorreltail's scents mingling together with the crisp morning rain.

"There's a rabbit by that holly thicket," Sorreltail whispered to him as she looked over her shoulder, spotting the little brown animal's ears bobbing as it nibbled on grass shoots.

"I'll go catch him," Brackenfur decided. After all, they were here to hunt! And they didn't need the whole clan wondering what they'd been up to out here if they came back empty pawed!

Though, as Brackenfur dropped onto his belly and began to stalk forward, he thought to himself that he wouldn't mind Firestar or Graystripe (or anyone else in the clan) harassing him about Sorreltail anymore. And as the tortoiseshell she-cat watched the handsome tom, she decided that she wouldn't mind it, either.
