*laughs*
Borg, or the Elder Gods from H.P. Lovecraft's writings, either are acceptable inferences to make.
Ever since they had to flee from the Milky Way, due to it being absorbed into an anomaly.
The small group of survivors from a few planets were now exposed to the entire wide universe. There is no such shelter as 'home' for them. Even if they were to reach their target destination safely, mankind's gestalt itself was at risk. There needed to be a strong unifying factor, otherwise everyone would turn on each other as has happened many times in our actual past. What better source of that unification, than the threat of the unknown, the alien, the strange?
Once you gain enough from those alien threats, be it technology or less physical treasures, where do you go from there? Are you now stranger than the things you once used to scare the children, and quiet the murmurs of dissident? Who knows.
That's the fun part of writing, I suppose.

Yis, getting all the maneuvering on. None of that bullshit flying like jet-fighters in space, here.
Heh, they sort of do look like USB connections, don't they. Their actual purpose is unknown, but they are probably ports of some kind.

I love it! The 'flying like fighters in space' is the worst thing ever.
Macross (and thereby Robotech Gen 1) was so bad at it that they hung a lampshade on it in the novelization (which was a very long series and actually quite good, for a shameless money-grab with writing on the same level as a decent fan-fic).
I suppose they might release the USB DEATH THINGIES?

Everybody was Kung-Fu fighting... well... some kind of fighting, anyway. The appropriate line was "fast as lightning", in any case. Too bad about their limited sensory capabilities... they made nice ship hulls, while they lasted.

Actually pretty durable vessels, all things considering. For the early period of the Order's resistance against the forces of mankind, their technology was superior to that of humans. The Order's technical advantage is lost over time, as humanity overwhelm other XenInt races across the universe, and sift through the wreckage for spoils. Genetic and technological information which combine to turn the humans into something akin to cosmic horrors.
All together, they last 218.7 (Earth) years against the combined forces of several Exna fleets.
The Mirror-warheads here bypass that by ripping the constituent molecules out of space-time and depositing it into the Mirror. Seriously high power stuff.

To dodge doom, don't be ...der? Err, that didn't work.
But seriously, don't be in the same location as a warhead. You can spoof the sensors with EWAR, or use other countermeasures. If you can track the missiles (if they don't use non-Newtonian drives), you can engage them with automatic defenses. Or start jettisoning cargo, and hope a bit of debris catches the incoming warhead.
That's a bit barbaric though. I'm sure more evolved species will have better options available to them.

ClassicalSalamander In reply to Daemoria [2016-07-25 05:54:18 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, "don't be where they are" is really the only counter.
Since my species uses gravity-manipulation for pretty much everything they do, I'm sure it'll end up being something gravity-like.
π: 0 β©: 1
Daemoria In reply to ClassicalSalamander [2016-07-25 06:13:07 +0000 UTC]
By my reckoning, gravity shielding is supreme against pretty much everything *but* missiles, torpedoes and other such active guided munitions. That type of shielding is essentially an advanced 'I'm not here' style defense, but once it is overloaded/overheated/otherwise temporarily disabled, the active munitions will have the simple task of arcing around and reacquiring the target.
Still, there are many ways of incorporating 'gravity' tech defenses. That example is just my own usage of it, for mankind. I'm interested to see how your race addresses the issue.

ClassicalSalamander In reply to Daemoria [2016-07-26 03:24:29 +0000 UTC]
Direct-action weapons like beams and unguided projectiles are easy peasy with gravity shielding. It's the guided munitions that require singularity-class shields... and require you to sustain them for the duration of the conflict.
The really awesome thing about singularities is that there is no space-like curve that leads across event horizon from the inside. Invert your singularity, and suddenly there are no space-like curves that lead across the event horizon from the outside. It doesn't matter how the projectile traverses space, or what drive system it uses... there simply are no space-like curves that cross the event horizon. The problem is generating and then inverting the singularity. Then you just have the little problem of knowing where things are relative to you, and maneuvering.
The ultimate defense is to 'turtle up' under an inverted singularity and then exit the system at trans-light using dead-reckoning to ensure you don't hit any massive bodies. On the other hand, you are literally running blind, and it's only useful for the getaway. If you're trying to fight, then you do need to use localized gravity shields that can be circumvented by guided munitions. In that case, you also need good point-defense to intercept the guided munitions that slip past the shields.

'Tanar' is roughly equivalent to a second, but is based off of some other interval other than the vibration of quartz. A 'cycle' is something like 3 of our years, but the actual length is deliberately vague. It might be the decay/ half-life of some element, something more universal than the rotation of a ball of rock and water around a glowing ball of incandescent gas.
The S-K drive is the non-Newtonian drive system developed about half way through the Darkwar, primarily as a way of overcoming movement prediction algorithms being employed by a Xeno-intelligence god-like entity. fav.me/d8haaw1
These drives are the only current systems able to provide maneuverability in the non-Newtonian Mirror universe as well.
The actual drive emitters are the circular arrays, seen on the Silka corvette and various other advanced military vessels. fav.me/d7xm5lq | fav.me/d8etph2 and fav.me/d7zts2e | fav.me/d8l0vaa .

That is an alien supercapital ship, from species 910342. This is an ambush scenario, a long range strike on a refueling fleet inside the radiation belt of a gas giant. The white drones are the only human forces in this image. (And the mirror-warheads too, I suppose, if you want to be technical...)
The time period that this scene takes place in is before the use of Mirror Gates. Mirror based tech is only at the 'make things go boom' stage, similar to how we historically used nuclear power for explosives before we utilized it for power.

These drones don't have omni-directional non-Newtonian drives, so they uses RCS to make quick changes to velocity and direction.Β They have RCS banks at the front and back, and vectored verniers to supplement the main drive system.
You are correct. Even during the earliest centuries of the Darkwar, mankind was developing Mirror technology. Like our own efforts to harness the atom in real life, the first developments were weapons of devastating power. Before we had power plants, we had nuclear weapons, after all.
Good eye, sir.

Yea, i really worked hard to sell the sense of scale, without resorting to lights on the alien vessels. Windows (albeit heavily protected ones) are one of the halmarks of the human ships. I made the Xeno ships black and windowless to make them that much more sinister/alien.
Thanks! I loved playing the homeworld games, they were a source of inspiration while growing up.

I gotta ask, why the effort to eliminate this species? Less competition? Also, how do the ships in your universe reach FTL?Β
π: 0 β©: 1
Daemoria In reply to MasterCheifn [2015-07-04 23:06:39 +0000 UTC]
This species in particular is a fairly large potential threat to humankind. Before the arrival of the human Exna Fleets, the species had a galaxy spanning civilization, and all the resources that offered.
The purge of any and all intelligent alien life is one of the key directives of the human Exna fleets. Inferno here is specifically tasked with capturing living specimens.
The reason for this? Primarily as a reason to unify humanity, intelligent alien life is typecast as monstrous. The best way to prevent humans from fighting amongst themselves is to give them a greater threat to stand united against. When you have a civilization that spans hundreds or thousands of galaxies, you need a strong unifying goal.
-=-=-
Humans have two methods of faster than light travel. 'Standard' FTL method uses the Alcubierre-Mossburg drive to travel through 'Slowspace', or the universe as you and I know it. This drive tech is limited to being installed on only a few ships, due to its massive cost. These most common of these ships are classified as Super Dreadnoughts, and can carry entire fleets inside parasite bays. A typical Super Dreadnought is 12 kilometers or more in length or height.
Myrhymn Waystation is one of the oldest dreadnoughts to use Alcubierre-Mossburg drives, in order to carry fleets to and from point destinations. This one is currently decommissioned, but still acts as a FTL transport.
Β
Super Dreadnought Axbet is a prototype Super Dreadnought, one of the only made in its hull designation.
Gul is a civilian operated corvette that has a Alcubierre-Mossburg drive.
The Purge -1- , and the following pages shows the Silka Corvette (a military vessel, operated by elements of the Laughing Swarm) using its Alcubierre-Mossburg drive to flee a fight.
-=-=-
But faster than light is still slow, even when you can reach several hundred or thousand times C. The universe is massive. There comes a time when you need to get to a location almost before you left... and that is where the Mirror comes into play. An artificial constructed universe made by humans, the Mirror has several properties that lend itself to very efficient travel throughout the universe.
While all Newtonian based engines can not function inside the Mirror, the ships initial velocity is maintained upon entering it. While traveling through the Mirror, all potential outcomes are said to occur simultaneously , allowing the ship to effectively be in all points of the universe simultaneously. The earliest technology to allow ships to travel to the Mirror required massive dimensional rifts to be constructed. These were known as Mirror Gates . (The Myrhmn Waystation is visible in the background, having dropped off a load of civilian ships to the Mirrorgate Hub)
Due to the nature of the artificial Mirror universe's effect on the human Psyche, ships are flown 'blind' from gate to gate. Observation of the Mirror without extensive modification can cause intense psychotic backlash, and permanent neurological damage.
The Mirror is not a friendly place to be stranded in.
