Description I wanted to make something actually worthy of !

So I tried drawing two characters from her webcomic. Rotera, which is very fascinating. [link]

o3o ...Go visit it?
it has light shounen-ai undertones...

alright. I've decided, I want to improve, so I'm asking people to critique my art from now on. Please do not critique unless I ask, though~ >w>;; Otherwise my self-esteem will drop to 0 K.
(K as in Kelvins. cB )

Please critique away! But please refrain from saying unnecessary things such as "Your faces suck, but that can easily be fixed! blah blah" and "lol stop trying to hide ur crap coloring with sparkles" (which is true, but I'm working on it... >3>;; )

Mainly, I want to work on color as solid with minor layers of streaking/detail rather than streaks and streaks, like this piece. (although Tolly's hair IS streaked! It's really pretty. )

...I love . o3o *heard her smexxiful voice yesterday/two days ago*

Actually I like this one the best out of your gallery concerning colours. They're vibrant and wonderfully done. The hair and streaks of light are incredible if you ask me. If you use a mouse, I'm even more impressed. I rather like your current style of colouring, it fits rather well with your style of drawing.

But anyways, I'm not quite clear as to what you mean when you say 'solid colouring'. Do you mean you want to change your style of colouring? Like Cell shading or something?

HTYMSITI [2009-03-30 08:04:17 +0000 UTC]

Critique in a nutshell:

Pros: Bold colors, great flow and motion, excellent zeal in the facial expression.

Con: Light streams are kinda skewed. Determining the radiating point of the light source will help fix that.

Better river bank definition. The water looks like it is "flying" above the ground. Going back and adding a few "bumps" and protrusions of the bank into the water, or even a few reeds, will help unify the forest and the waterway.

The sparkles really aren't that bad. I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Wow. A bit more than a nutshell, huh? lol

'Ello! I must point out that in the comic there is no ground in this scene, they're traveling between dimensions, all that's there is water and floating orbs of light.

Ah, okay. My bad on that point. That does make more sense.

It is a common thing for people, in drawing shore lines to skip actually integrating the water and land, so that was what I was going on.

I'll be heading over to your comic later tonight to read, after I finish reading through Escape Exit.

Ummm... I just posted another today. But no I don't have regular updates because I know I'll break that schedule and I remember being really disheartened when comics I like don't update when they claim they will.

But I update as often as possible. Although I did have a huge unforetold hiatus after my headaches started... but that's another story.

thanks for asking!

HTYMSITI In reply to SilverWhirl [2009-04-05 20:19:07 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I can understand that. I was all Gung-HO on making a comic a few months ago, set a schedule and all, but real life (work, doctors, class, etc) managed to put a kabosh on it all.

I hope you have found a solution to your headaches. (I'm assuming it is the medical kind, and not just RL stress.) I've dealt with migraines for most of my life, and can appreciate how they can take your life away...

SilverWhirl In reply to HTYMSITI [2009-04-05 20:31:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. It's really disheartening. But I've found if I get myself together and post a comic I feel like making as many as I can before life catches back up.

Eh. Nope. Constant headache, nonstop migraine for 5 months. OTL

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HTYMSITI In reply to SilverWhirl [2009-04-05 21:02:02 +0000 UTC]

That's a good way to look at it, really. Do it when you enjoy, otherwise what would be the point, hmm?

My sessions usually run three or four months at a time. The worst was '98, with 10 months of OMGWTFBBQ pain. But after a while I learned to manage it, focus out the pain, and at least be able to function in daily tasks. Just gotta keep moving forward...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverWhirl In reply to HTYMSITI [2009-04-05 21:29:05 +0000 UTC]

Exactly!

Wow. I never really got headaches before. And for a while the were debilitating. My neurologist gave me meds, but they don't work. No meds I've tried have. He doesn't actually know why I get them, and is really confused because I have minimal stress.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HTYMSITI In reply to SilverWhirl [2009-04-05 23:11:04 +0000 UTC]

They tried to give me pain killers for it. Fiorinal is the Devil Incarnate! One pill, three days of withdrawals! After that, I started to work on my meditation again. Rationalizing the pain helped me to push it aside so I could function.

One thing that triggers mine is weather changes. When a storm is about 20 minutes away, the pain starts building. Actually found that earplugs help, just like how some people use them for flying to control the pressure changes.

Heh. I have found so many triggers over the years... food, stress, colors, sound. Just keeping a diary of sorts of what you do/eat/experience each day can help to narrow down possible causes. (Though it gets to be a PIA after a while. lol)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverWhirl In reply to HTYMSITI [2009-04-06 03:19:01 +0000 UTC]

Eh... I'm on amitriptyline. I started at half a pill. But it hasn't worked and he upped it many times so now I'm at 8 times my original dose and I take 4 pills. Not withdrawal symptoms. And no worky.

My other doctor tried some other things and none of them work. Basic meds like acetaminophen don't work either.

No trigger as far as we can tell. They're always there. Any moment of the day people will ask and I'll be like, "Yeah, it hurts. Still." And it just hasn't stopped in 5 months. I do keep a calendar of my days and the neurologist thinks I should be fine.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HTYMSITI In reply to SilverWhirl [2009-04-06 03:45:23 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... I did a bunch of research over the years, trying to figure out my own triggers. I think food tends to be the main one people think of, or allergies. One that many people, and doctors, miss is dental. One little cavity or abscess, sometimes a tooth pressing just right on a nerve, and Pow! Instant migraine.

But with the whole transferal of pain problem, a nerve trigger could be anywhere in your body. And most insurance companies wont pay for someone to check out every little detail, millimeter by millimeter.

I've been lucky enough to figure out some food triggers. Carmel coloring is one, and it is everywhere. Potatoes is another, though it is a seasonal thing. Every year, the genetic make up of potatoes are tweaked a little bit. Some years I am fine, others I have one french fry and I am curled up in a ball in the corner wishing I was dead. lol

As long as I can still laugh, I am doing okay. It's strange. I become a much happier, cheery person during the attacks. Miserable, but I don't like to have people treat me with kids gloves, so I keep a happy (with an occasional grimace) face on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverWhirl In reply to HTYMSITI [2009-04-06 20:23:49 +0000 UTC]

We've been trying and trying to find what triggers it. We went to the dentist, he said that everything was perfectly fine. The optometrist said I was noticing the discrepancy between my eyes, and that my right eye was just a slight bit better than my left and that they had the same prescription, but they said it shouldn't make my cause this at all.

And the lack of ideas for triggers is why I still have this problem. I don't need to worry about the insurance.

I see my allergist every six months and he hasn't noticed any changes in my allergies, except that they're really well controlled by the meds he's prescribed. I haven't acquired any new ones. Ugh, Potatoes? That's kind of sad... I love potatoes.

Yeah, I'm very good at that, when I tell people that I've had horrible headaches for five months they're really surprised, and most people just brush it off because I've been acting completely normal. Although I've always been recognized as an exhuberentl happy person.

Here is a link to the Mayo Clinic website you might find helpful. [link]

I have what is called Cluster Headaches. For decades it was grouped in with migraines, but it is finally getting its own category for treatment. Over the years, I've found it easier to explain it to people by just calling them migraines, even though it is kind of a different bird... Still hurts like h3ll during the attacks.

There is a ton of information on that site. Hopefully it will give you some ideas to bring up with your doctors that they hadn't considered yet. Mayo also has lots of medical articles that are a good read, and plenty of links and such. Probably the best resource I have found yet. (And I've been looking for almost 20 years now...)

What kinds of triggers have you ruled out so far, aside from dental and optical? Does anything seem to help, even a little? (Always looking for new ideas to make the pain manageable.)

Yeah, Spuds 'O DOOM! lol Every year, they selectively breed better potatoes to make them yield more and be more pest and disease resistant. Unfortunately, that means every year the new crop has a little bit of a different make up, and can cause reactions in some people. I just have to watch out for the warning signs that I am having a reaction, and take them out of my diet for a while.

SilverWhirl In reply to HTYMSITI [2009-04-07 03:55:16 +0000 UTC]

Apparently I'm in prime physical condition and shouldn't be having any health problems whatsoever. Whenever I tell people I have a headache they brush it off, not understanding that, though technically not a migraine, it hurts just as much.

What helps seems to be... not moving. D: We've ruled out foods, allergies, optical, dental and environmental causes. And according to an MRI I have no tumors... which is a good thing. But there's some "weird discrepancies" in the grey matter. Woot? BRAIN.

*sigh*

I will go off and research the genetic makeup of potatoes so that I can engineer the perfect headache proof potato just for you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HTYMSITI In reply to SilverWhirl [2009-04-07 23:57:31 +0000 UTC]

Discrepancies in the grey matter? There was a couple of bits of new information I saw on Mayo, and part of it was studies actually isolating areas of the brain that are most likely where the pain signals are coming from. Included in that are, yes, discrepancies around those points, that may be causing the problems.

Science has moved so far along since I was diagnosed. I was given one option: Find a pain killer that works and try to live with it. Of course, the only one that did work, they pulled off the market a few years later. Seeing that new research gives me a little bit more hope that others won't have to go through what I have...

A headache proof potato... One can dream. lol. Now if only they could make a red tomato that I can eat without my stomach trying to kill me. I miss Italian food...

SilverWhirl In reply to HTYMSITI [2009-04-08 00:47:30 +0000 UTC]

Apparently they're very common and could be just a poor MRI. He wants me to go to a better MRI place and try again in 3 months.

Science is really amazing, the rate at which it advances is incredible!

I'll add the tomato to the list!

HTYMSITI In reply to SilverWhirl [2009-04-09 02:40:30 +0000 UTC]

I think that they do it because A) they have no idea what is going on, and B) they are hoping the problem will fix itself.

Last summer, I developed costochondritis. I was sent to see specialists for heart (Perfectly fine) and lungs (I have 125% of the lung capacity of an average person, even when I was having issues breathing), had x-rays and exams, and they couldn't figure anything out. It wasn't until I started looking on line for the symptoms that I found other people with the same problem. And just by luck, one forum had a posting from a nurse suggesting the person ask their doctor about costochondritis. And so, two months later when I went back in for my next check up, I told Dr Z about it. I don't think he was expecting the patient to tell him what was wrong, what the treatment procedures were, etc. lol

It's fun to tweak the PHDs every now and then.

So, if you ever get depressed or frustrated about it, start looking for more information outside of your doctor. Having something to discuss with him/her, be it possible theories or causes or treatments, will give you more control over it all and may possibly give the doctors an idea to follow.

Trust, but verify. Trust what your doctor says is true, but always verify the information with a third party.

When my headaches started, I was friends with an RN. She gave me more information that any doctor had,as well as more options and methods for controlling and coping with the pain. When I told her this, she half joking/half seriously told me " That is why they are called a PRACTICING physician. They are still learning things as they go."

I think everything you said was awesome and made a lot of sense but I lack the time, alertness, and general mental capabilities to make a proper reply.

And that has been true for a while now, which explains why I haven't replied in the past 16 days... I've read your message at least 300 times though. I've noticed nuances that you didn't even think about and interpreted every possible meaning, intended or not, but the place in my mind for replies is bare and... surprise surprise; I have a headache.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HTYMSITI In reply to SilverWhirl [2009-04-27 03:26:24 +0000 UTC]

Nuances? ACK!

lol I know I dumped a lot of stuff into that post... You have no idea how much I held back! I've been dealing with mine for a couple of decades now, so whenever I come across someone with a simliar issue, the floodgates open and I end up swamping them with everything I can think of that might help. Sorry if I did that this time...

I know it is difficult to focus and think when your brain is trying to force its way out of your skull. That is when I switch to autopilot and kinda flow through the day...

Just hang in there, okay? If I can be of help somehow, please let me know. Even if you just need to vent frustrations about life, the Universe, and everything- you have a willing ear to bend here.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverWhirl In reply to HTYMSITI [2009-04-27 04:13:28 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. No-one really knows the possible meanings behind everything they say, and when they think about it... it's scary. I've told people that before and they review what they said and ask themselves,"WHAT DID I MEAN?!"

Ah, well I appreciate the understanding, and the willing ear. Thank you so much. I might one day use that ear to my benefit, before I break, but for now, thank you, it means a lot that there's someone.

Very true. Measuring ones words is important to do, but almost impossible to achieve.

Of course, now that you said that, I have the nagging need to know how it was interpreted! lol

Just as long as it wasn't taken in a negative way, I don't need to know.

I do it to mess with people's minds. I usually have a primary meaning that's the point I want to get across, and a secondary meaning that I believe, but would make no sense with the context.
