I painted this last year in Painter IX.

One of the bad habits I had long been in from the anime style I used to use was the simplification of hair. This painting started as an exercise in weeding out that aspect of my old style and seeing just how far I could push the detail of the hair. The end result became a hybrid of those styles: the spiky anime clumps combined with the high detail level gives the hair an unusual sculpted look that I quite like.

After putting so many hours into the hair I decided to use this as a benchmark image for the rest of my figure drawing capability, and several hours later it turned out as one of the few paintings I've done that I'm happy with.

I went for a glamour model look for the character with lighting designed to give the impression of a two-point studio setup. Red and gold are among my favourite colour combinations, hence the gold highlights in the hair.
