Yep, it takes a lot of patience. It might sound weird, but for butterflies it helps to try to find out when they typically eat, as they will land on flowers for quite a while and this makes for great photo opportunities. I came upon this lovely guy easily and he was a very cooperative model. I didn't have to wait at all. It was so easy in fact that I was sure the images would not be that great, but they came out much better than I had hoped. Butterfly shots didn't come as easily after this series. I spent nearly 15 minutes the other day chasing a gorgeous swallow tail butterfly, but I failed to actually get a good shot. It's all part of the fun though.

Sure, it's part of the fun. It can be fun just to sit there without taking pictures at all.
I really enjoy being outside watching butterflies/dragonflies.
We have had butterflies very early this year, but we don't have a huge variety.
Maybe it's because of the bad weather conditions. There's not much of a variety of flowers to sit and dine either 
If you don't mind I would take one of your butterflies as a reference for a drawing.
