Not really. Ditto can change its overall shape. The Thing mutilates its host.

One could portray ditto as an amoeba-like creature, or a slime mold... I've seen some other art of realistic ditto, and granted they're not a LOT different, but there's still some realism possible.

Compared to all the other weird kinds of Pokemon there are, Ditto is just the tip of the iceberg.
Though it does differentiate itself from the others by being only one of 2 Pokemon capable of learning Transform.

There's a strong fan theory that since Ditto is an artificially created Pokemon, it may actually be a failed attempt at cloning Mew (before humans went and created Mewtwo). Hence why they are the same color (both regular and shiny) and are the only Pokemon capable of learning Transform.

Mew has always been able to learn Transform since Gen. 1.
In terms of the anime, Mew showed off its ability to transform in the 8th movie, Lucario and Mystery of Mew.

It always puzzled me until I saw my cousins play a Pokemon fighting game. It showed Ditto having the ability to turn into another Pokemon and copy its abilities.
