Description Experimenting with Terragen 4 again. I'm really excited how clouds can be sculpted and directed. So here we have some grassy summer meadows in the highlands.

Enjoy!

Wow at first, I thought "how did a photo get into a fractals group?" but I knew there had to be a good reason. There was! it looks like Terragen has come a long, long way since the last time I tried it...many moons ago

Thanks for your comment and sorry for my late answer! Yes, Terragen has made some good progress in accessibility and realism, I think. Fiddled with it some years ago and gave up, now its quite fun to use. Have a great day!

Nicely done! I've only just started using the free v.3,4. Sill deciding whether I'll go for 4. Have you been using it for long? I'll have a look at your gallery!

Thanks for your comment, Bronwyn! I have been using the Terragen4 beta for about a month now. I fumbled with an older version of Terragen some time ago but found it to be really slow with the triangulating preview. As far as I know, the main advantage to prior versions is that Terragen4 has a realtime raytrace preview which shows the entire scene with clouds and light in a manageable way. Changes in clouds and light are updated immediately which is a big time saver and makes a more creative approach possible in my opinion (though the triangulating preview is still needed for generating geometry). You can check out the Terragen4 beta on their website free until end of August.

All the best! Norman

(I sound like a sales rep, but there is no affiliation with TG )

You're welcome Norman. From what I have seen the earlier versions did look very clumsy in comparison. I did try to get the free beta, several times. but for some reason the page it goes to after I click and save the down load just wouldn't work. I emailed them about it and we went through trying a few things but they couldn't sort it out and just ended up apologising to me and told me they had the same report from a few people. I am hesitant to pay for it now but I guess if the same thing happened they would be nice enough to give m money back - I hope!!

That's a pity it didn't work. Hmm, maybe you've had the same trouble as I did - the beta is provided as a .msi download. The handling of msi files can be tricky with Firefox (don't know about other browsers). I had to use a trick and save the file as a .dat file and then rename it with the .msi extension to avoid some filehandling troubles. By the way, if you are using Firefox, it automatically appends a .htm extension to the Terragen msi file for whatever reason. Maybe that was the problem? Hope this helps!

Actually that does sound like something similar! I'll give your suggestion a try - tomorrow night - just about bed time now, gotta get up early for work. Thanks - and I do use firefox

Hey, did anyone have any better luck here? I use Firefox too. I wonder if things would go better on a different browser? I might be willing to give Terragen another go, my previous efforts with it were nothing to brag on, best left to the mists of past history!

It didn't end up working for me so I emailed the terragen support team again and told them what had been suggested. hey agreed it was a firefox problem and sent me a link o a direct download which did work. I'm not sure the free beta v4 will still be available

Do you have that link, and would you mind passing it on to me? You can note me if you would rather not put it here. I looked at their support forum and it seems there have been other troubles with v4 crashing, etc. But still I'd be interested in giving it a try if that link works for you. Of course the free beta might not be available any longer, it's been 2 months since the announcement.

Copied from breaking models blog, July 3: "Planetside Software has announced the open beta of Terragen 4 the landscape creation software that will be completely free and unrestricted (the software will stop working after a month)." Does yours still work?

No sorry I don't, I clear me email pretty regularly, but just checked their site and it is still available - if you have problems their support is under contact us -terragen4.com/beta/

LG Alois
