Personality:
- Sensible- Despite often being led by her feelings, she has a good sense of rationality that keeps her on solid ground. She takes the time to apply common sense into her decision making, no matter how emotionally charged the situation is.
- Cautious- This trait was most definitely strengthened by the events of the apocalypse. From mistaking a crawler for an injured person to narrowly escaping attacks from thieves, various traumas have strengthened her sense of vigilance.
- Altruistic- She truly does want to help people and the environment around her. She has belief in people coming together and supporting each other in hard times. (better hold tight to those ideals if this deer child is getting a happy end)
- Spiritual- Deeply believes in minor forest deities and a creator God, whom she prays to in private. Another reason in which she feels that nature is so important, it's quite literally her religion. Very quiet about her views, its something close to her heart that she doesn't want people making fun of.
- Peaceful- Zoe is not a natural born fighter. She'd rather avoid conflict. Let her plant her gardens in peace please.
- Easily attached- Even though she knows that letting people become close will only hurt her in end, she can't seem to cut herself off. One friendly conversation and she already feels connected to the other.
- Impatient- There are times when she moves and arrives to conclusions quicker then the people around her. And she becomes irritated quickly when they don't catch up fast enough to her thinking.
- Shy- Not the cutesy shy but the "I'm absolutely terrified to share my ideas and opinions because I'm afraid that I will be judged and attacked" shy. She's not open to share her deepest thoughts, and doesn't take criticism well.
- Selfish- Not that she aims to be, but her overall want to be safe and secure can be placed over the needs of others. (This trait is the tip towards the bad end, no spoilers)
- Cowardly- And here it is, her Achilles heel. It's quite easily the weakest and most dislikable trait she possesses. When faced with a challenge, her first instinct is to flee. She'd rather have someone else fight for her.
In summary, it's her cowardice that holds her back from becoming someone who advocates for peace, shares her knowledge, and freely gives her ideas to further better the world around her. She'd rather hide and safely plant her gardens then step out and face reality. It's an ugly reality, but she needs to adapt to it and accept what has happened. So will she resort to manipulation as events worsen, using the protection and loyalty of others to her advantage? Keep them fighting for her? Or will she step up to the occasion and no longer run and hide?
idk man.
History:
Before
She was your average college student studying Environmental Science (specifically Forestry), and winning track medals in the scenic tourist town of Paradise, Michigan. Zoe was heading towards a secure future, and her goal to help preserve and protect the environment was being worked towards steadily, a career in resource management was just around the corner.
Her family had always been very close with nature. For most of her life, Zoe was outside, enjoying the expanse of forest around her home. Movies, TV, and the internet never really drew her in, she's comfortable with reading a book next to a gently flowing stream. Her older step-brother (Steven) liked to go on camping adventures where he taught her all kinds of survival skills. After Steven joined the military, Zoe passed down these camping trips to her much younger adopted brother (Russell). In addition to camping, the whole family went on hikes frequently, and sometimes racing along the myriad of forest trails on ATV's. Hunting was another sport, but her mother and step-brother were more enthusiastic about it. Zoe learned how to shoot So all this to say, she grew up with a deep apprecaition of nature. Enough that she wanted to make her life devoted to it.
Day of the Outbreak
On the morning that the infection reached her town, her friends were all discussing the weird events that had been happening lately. Rumors of a plague, the internet malfunctioning, all the conspiracy theories floating around, and etc. Quite a few of them were extremely worried. Zoe decided to clear her head by going on a run along the forest that lead to her home. She didn't expect to run all the way there, just a mild two miles’ roundtrip. But as she was about to turn around, she received a phone call from her parents.
The call was extremely choppy, but her mom sounded hysterical, asking where she was in the town, and Zoe thought that she heard a "Come home immediately!" from her father in the background. But before she could ask what was going on, the call was cancelled. She tried to call back again and again, even climbing a tree at some point, but there was no phone service to be found anymore. Thinking that it must be a family emergency, she ran home. The whole ten miles. When she turned up, she was appropriately exhausted, and there was no one at home. Only the family dog, Brenden. Her family had taken the car to go back into the town and rescue Zoe. By now Zoe was pretty shaken up, she had no clue what was going on, not even the TV worked. So she dug up her father's old battery powered radio, which was amazingly the thing that finally worked. She tuned into the news stations, and couldn't believe what she heard. It all sounds so bizarre and even stupid.... but there was no denying that her family was gone and communication was down. If the only explanation she received was a plague, she'd have to take it.
So now Zoe had to try and find her family, so she packed a bag with every good survival item that she knew of, all while talking to Brenden to keep herself from losing her head. She might have wondered if taking her mom's shotgun would be overkill, but thankfully she talked herself into it. "Better over-prepared then under-prepared, right Brenden?" //dog woofs// As she headed out back to the town, the survivors were already fleeing by vehicle, zooming right past her house. She tried to flag them down to get an explanation, some information, anything. One pickup pulls over, but instead of stopping to chat, the person roughly threw her and her dog into his vehicle with his two crying children, and hightails it out of there. This act saved her life, but she wasn't extremely grateful in the present moment. What the hell was even going on??
Finding Brentwood
The apocalypse still has her captive in a passive state of shock, these past six months have been so full of running, surviving through her knowledge of the forest and sheer luck, and constantly avoiding danger in the forms of both the undead and the living. While half a year is a long time, she's still had barely enough to fully process how many people she's lost (and the doggo. Brenden is dead sorry I don't have a heart yes I know). The grief hits her most when she finds a place where she can rest for a little while. Maybe that's why she kept moving on even when there was no danger in sight. But then she happened across Brentwood. The welcoming atmosphere drew her in, the leader had a love of trees that mirrored her own. Here she had a chance to live behind a wall and contribute to this little community by putting her knowledge of plants to use. So she stayed, and now she faces the new threat of letting people into her heart.
