Description Hi all,

Here is a collection of some east German customs uniforms and insignias for assistans and secretaries from 1962 to 1990.

History
The customs administration of the GDR was as the executive body of the Ministry of Foreign Trade from 1962 to 1990
It was created in 1962 from the "Amt für Zoll und Kontrolle des Warenverkehrs (AZKW)" (office of customs and trade control) Which existed since 1952.

Its duties consisted of the supervision of goods, foreign exchange and money transactions and of course the inbound and outbound tourism (together with the border troops) at the border crossings of the GDR.

Uniformology
Since the customs was a civilian and not a combat unit there were a few small differences in the uniforms. However, with the exception of the rank insignia it was based on the unifomization scheme of the other state organizations like the police, fire department etc.

Thank you!
Our intention is to illustrate more of the rarer Uniforms/Organisations in contrast to what is already displayed on DA.
There also might be quite some stuff about the GDR but fortunately it's mostly about the NVA so there is enough room to work with.

So what other GDR organisations maybe featured in the grand scheme of things?

Well, socialist or communist states usually have a big state apparatus in this case for example the Red Cross in the GDR, the Society for Sports and Technology, the fire department, the railway even state travel agencies and restaurant companies etc.

Yes, the uniforms use went very deep in these countries. How deep are you going to dive in to the non military uniforms?

Well, we are going to deal with the bigger ones like the fire department, Red Cross etc. first because our sources are more limited about the smaller ones.

That makes sense, I found a fair bit of information about the DDR fire department on google, so it does exist on the internet! I think I still have it somewhere.

Yes that's right and we are happy about every additional source. Fortunately, the books on the People's Police that we have used for the last collections are also unusable for the Red Cross and the Fire Department.

Yes, there are sources out there. Are the Red Cross and Fire Department uniforms covered in any books?

Because the fire department as well as the rest of the security organs of the GDR were administratively united by (political) cooptation the uniforms were based on those of the People's Police.
Sources of this are the two books mentioned in the collection [DDR] East German Police [C#1] www.drk-ddr.de/page.php?v=2020…

Sufficient sources and references are provided by a normal (German) Google search on GRC in the GDR. (DRK in der DDR). There are enough uniform examples but unfortunately a poorly described administrative structure.

Thanks for sharing the wonderful links and plate links, much appreciated! The administrative structure of things is usually the most complicated the more 'Democratic' you proclaim your regime to be! Seems to be the way!
