I saw this and my jaw dropped! I've seen plenty of great macro images... But a spot on focus with good depth of field of a dragonfly IN FLIGHT!?!? WOW! O_O

Was it because the dragonfly was beyond your 200 mm range, or you wanted to create the blurred background that you used a 1.4x teleconverter for "ultra" telephoto zoom? It's extremely hard to hand-held a large camera set like this, right?

The background blur is really due to the Fstop (F5.6). Using large Fstops will give you more depth of field, but also more background detail. For a shot like that one I didn't want the background to be distracting and I didn't need a lot of depth so I went with a relatively small Fstop.
I never crop my images, so I used the 1.4x teleconverter to make the dragon larger in the frame. It was hovering over a lagoon so I was limited in how close I could get to it.
Yes, it's not easy hand holding long glass. But the lens I used has image stabilization so that helped.

haha just a little experience then.. do you manually figure out your magnification ratio to?

The the MPE-65mm macro lens it's easy -there are marks on the lens that tell you what the magnification is.

ahh, thats convenient. I use a canon 100mm macro for my macro shots, and now that you mention it i think theres somethin there that tells me. I used to use a 25-200mm lens with a 4T filter on it, but quality was terrible so got the 100mm macro

There are magnification marks on the focus ring of the 100mm, but they are only accurate when the lens is bare...
