Description A newly hatched darter, kinda tough to nail down the species until they get all of their color but I think this is a Red Veined Darter female.

Tech Specs: Canon 1D Mark III in shutter priority mode (F8, 1/400, ISO 800) + a Canon EF-S 60mm macro lens + a 12mm extension tube.

1/400 because I was hand holding the lens and the 1/focal length rule breaks down at about 1/4 life size. The higher the magnification the higher your shutter needs to be when shooting in natural light.

ISO 800 so I could shoot at F8 (overcast skies).

Working distance for this shot: About 5 inches (12.5CM). Adding the extension tube drops the working distance of the lens. The dragonfly was active, and it took several minutes to get it use to me being so close. The critter wouldn't let me get close enough for some high magnification photos.

Note: When you use an EF-S 60mm macro lens on a non-EFS capable camera you MUST use an extension tube. I keep a 12mm tube on my copy of the lens at all time.

Thanks

The weather here hasn't been stable, so we are just now getting them. I've seen them as early as March.
