Description I trapped this ugly critter under a cup with a napkin, and on the napkin I put a little honey. Once the fly was busy eating I took off the cup and started shooting. To get better shadows I placed one flash head (the key) on a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe. Hand held, single frame (non-stacked).

Tech specs: Canon 40D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MPE-65mm macro lens (@4.5x) + a diffused MT-24EX.

How alien... Do you have Tree Hoppers in your area? They would be a great challenge/subject for you.

We have a very small species that comes in green and blue colors -but they are incredibly skittish!

ThatΒ΄s really impressive John!Fantastic detail and very good light also.I like it very much!
I donΒ΄t know what monitor do you use but I see this size a bit larger-have to use the scroll.
Be well,
Remus

Thanks Remus

I've been setting all of my images to a 1600 pixel width if they are landscape shots so if people want to use them as desktop wallpaper they can.

That's pretty darn close, John. Great stuff. Was out shooting macros again last Sunday. First time out for nearly a year. Loved it.

I was wondering what you're using for diffusers these days. I remember you saying you were talking to the Lumiquest guys about one for the MT-24EX. I'm using the Ultrabounces, one on each head. They're a touch big IMO.

Thanks

See this post on my blog -I recently redesigned my diffusers [link]

No joy getting Lumiquest to build one...

I see. Bugger I really like all their other stuff. The ultrabounce works ok, but haven't tried it on anything shiny like ladybirds yet as per your test run. See here: [link]

That ladybird was pretty much a worse case situation -both lights low and pointed right at the critter.

That fly shot you took does look really good though -will be interesting to see what the specular highlights look like on a more reflective subject.

I've been on a bit of a macro hiatus. Planning on hitting it a bit harder in the next couple of months. Got the bug again, so to speak...

Flies seem to have wonderfully unusual and unique facial features. Certainly not the prettiest, but intriguing none the less.

Stunning photo, as usual the focus is great and tack sharp!

keep it up!
