Description German law prohibits the wearing of a swastika, so in 1957 the West German government authorised replacement Iron Crosses with an Oak Leaf Cluster in place of the swastika, similar to the Iron Crosses of 1813, 1870, and 1914, which could be worn by World War II Iron Cross recipients. The 1957 law also authorised de-Nazified versions of most other World War II-era decorations (except those specifically associated with Nazi Party organizations, such as SS Long Service medals, or with the expansion of the German Reich, such as the medals for the annexation of Austria, the Sudetenland, and the Memel region).

Did you know that the ancient Greeks used the swastika as a decoration symbol? Thousands of years before it was used as symbol of Nazism...

I still don't really get that swastikas are forbidden, but the red star, hammer and sickle aren't...

That might be... I just find it kinda laughalbe that they even made fuss about those sew-on patches that depicted a crossed out swastika, or one being thrown in the bin, while it apparently is no problem to wear symbols of the Soviet regime... But it might be due to being from Hungary that I easily get pissed when people think that the Soviets "weren't so bad" as the Nazis...

Yes the Soviet regime and pre revolutionary Russia killed more Jews than the Nazis. The Hammer and Sickle are symbols of the worker not just the Russians, the ideology of communism is sound, it's just people that cause the problems.

Sadly, people are the ones that would need to make it work, so it seems quite impossible to me. From what my family experienced back then, it was an age of thievery, deceit, and terror, so I get quite enraged when someone openly waves banners of the past in my face

Regimes come and go, people stay the same all the negative things you mention still exist today and they allways will no matter who has the whip hand

At least one doesn't get taken away by any secret service at the moment, at least around here. Though sometimes, countries that consider themselves to be the haven of freedom go against their own citizens... [link]

Nice detailed image, I'm very happy that the German govt saved the iron cross from going in to history as a symbol of the nazi relm.
Your note to the photo is allso very informative, thank you. I learned something new about history today.

Glad it was of interest, the history of the iron cross is so much more that the 6 years it was in use by the nazi regime. First instituted in 1813 during the Napoleonic wars.

I knew that it dated back to the 19th century, I just didn't know when. I did not know when the law that saved it was instated either... so I learned a lot today
