Moriz didn't get there through conventional means. He couldn't. His parents didn't have money, so he had to work his hardest to be one of those lucky few to get a scholarship. It was hard. Scholarships were rare in these days, even rarer for people from the lower city who were generally considered second class citizens. Moriz was way too young, he never had private tutors and wasn't raised bi-lingual, but he never half-assed anything. He decided to do so well that they couldn't deny him, even though those universities absolutely despised lower city scum like him. He made it through the intake tests with the highest score ever seen in the history of Yasny university. A week later he received his acceptation letter and left for the Kamnyc district. He didn't tell anyone, not even his dad. He doubted the old man would even sober up enough to notice he was gone.Moriz never fitted in with the people in the lower city. Being a Yasny student had always been his dream. He hoped it would lead to a happier life, and in a way it did. His health got a lot better once he left that poisoned ground. No more headaches and fevers. Though some things never changed. He didn't didn't fit in with the other students at all. Even though he dressed impeccable and kept his mouth shut so his heavy accent wouldn't give him away, they still gave him that patronizing look. He hated it, but it made him sad too. And every so often he felt alone in that crowd.
A young Moriz, back in the day when he was still a student. He wore his hair differently back then.
First time I tried drawing the city of Darkai in years. I've written a whole lot about this huge city that looks like it comes out of some kind of sci-fi novel, but I never seemed to really capture it.

Now, it's probably just me but I think the random people in the foreground are too... detailed? It's like they are taking away the attention from main character. I can't tell you what to do but experimenting with shilouettes could be a good idea. Or more blurring maybe...

This is honestly one of my favourite pieces of yours. It all exudes the feeling of being alone in the crowd, not just the placement of the characters, but also the cyber-punk design of the city. I love the use of colours and the way you made Moriz in the light and the other characters in the shadow. Really emphasizes how isolated he feels.

But then a part of you is like "yes... they think they're better, but they're not and you'll show them."

It's a common hairstyle for students, wearing your hair out of your face. And Moriz really tries to blend in at this time. You see it with the clothing too. When he's older he hardly ever wears a tie. He doesn't like it. Too restricting.
I'm sure if they'd been nicer to him he could've ended up differently. By nature he's a kind and rather sensitive person. Dealing with other students and teachers really stresses him, not the schoolwork itself (he's one of their best students and quite confident in his learning ability). If someone just reached out to him and befriended him he'd probably end up being a very different person.

Hahaha. I've played with that on my head too. What would happen if he went on and wasn't fucked over every single time and ended up being a good guy. I think he might have become something closer to what Aiden is in the story. Perhaps not as famous and charismatic, but certainly as brilliant. Helping humanity forward, like Aiden did with his powerplant.

Oooh what if he met Elaine at the same time as Aiden. Sweet doctor or charismatic biophysicist? Nope. Can't write it. Too close to a dream come true. I'd want to make Elaine a self-insert, which is just asking for trouble.

Hahaha. Aiden would always win. He's much more of a charismatic figure. And Moriz isn't into women anyway. Quite ironic, because even in the main story he has quite the number of ladies fancy him (which he is usually unaware of. Hahaha)
Moriz does get a chance of redemption much later in the story. Where he's allowed back into Ground Zero, continues research and actually does find a cure for quite a number of diseases using his esper-related research. He turns out to be quite the good guy if treated right. And once he's back in Darkai and under good management he's treated with much respect. His brief encounter with Anima kind of serves as a motivation as well.
Moriz is as morally gray as one could get. A brilliant mind that's capable of both great good and great evil. To him it's mostly about the challenge of the job itself, of doing something other people can't.

Awesome job with the background, cities are a hard thing to draw! I really like the shapes of the buildings, and the touches of life with the people passing by and the tv in the background. It's very alive and you did a good job capturing his feelings.
