Description
first off, i'd like to mention that my mother's hand is in the picture because she was taking these as the were being finished. i know it's not a very professional thing, but it was almost midnight, and i had other projects to tackle by the next day as well. also, we don't have the masks anymore to take better pics. sorry.
i was asked to make 20 masks for a movie that my boyfriend is in. there's going to be a party scene, and the director wanted to know if it would be possible for me to do this (i had a week!). it sounded really, fun, and i was sucked into it when he had me google the movie "eyes wide shut" to look at their masks - they are breathtaking. anyway, here's one of the 17 i ended up painting(stina did three of them, and i'll post those in scraps probably.)
the masks were created using plaster on a live model's face(i have no molds, and certainly no time to put thought or effort into making some). my mom, three friends, and myself all sat with lots of vaseline on our faces to get plaster strips applied. the process varied with skill and precision from 5 to 20 minutes. then you have to wait a few minutes for the plaster to dry enough that you can pull it from the face without it losing shape. afterwards i fixed the edges up, and they were spraypainted with silver and a little black(to dull the stark shine of the metallic). the paints i used for the detailing were my cheap acrylics using a limited pallate of only red, black, and yellow. the black and yellow made a nice green-ish colour, and the red and black ended out being plum. (my fave colour combination by the way
). oh, and obviously the mix of red and yellow got me orange, but i'm thinking you all know that ^_^
the director asked if i could make the masks "picasso-esque" using random shapes and the limited pallate that i said earlier. well....i never did understand picasso, so unfortuntately, the only bit of that i understood was "random shapes". mind you, i got all my directives over the phone, so he couldn't describe exactly what he was picturing. either way, when he came to pick up the masks, he was blown away and loved them, so i'm very happy about that.
this is actually one of my favorite masks, and i wish my mom hadn't taken such a blurry picture. oh well. i used only yellow and black for this design. and i know for a fact that this mask was my mother's face(if anyone cares
) criticism welcome
