Hey Dan, got a question. Where would I take my work to get high quality scans done? I called Lazerquick, but they said they don't have high quality scanners and the largest they can scan is 11"x17". I don't know how else to get scans done of my work, some of them are 18"x24" and I don't have a scanner that large... Any ideas? Should I just use a camera and take photo's of them?

Your best bet is to take hi res photos and go through an online print store. That's what I do. There are a ton of them out there and they all offer pretty good deals every now and then.

Oh my word, this is beautiful...how long did it take you to do this?!
This is a very creative representation of an angel. Too many people just stick wings and a robe on people and call it a day. I love the mask.

Hey Bro, thanks for the heads up! I read the comments and what he says is way off. It's true that there are similar pieces from one artist to the next but not like that. Maybr I'll enter the contest lol.

Question, how did you make the wings look so realistic? Did you use a photo reference? The shading, or forming of them are so subtle yet, it's all that's needed. They look great. I use alot of deep value changes in my art, so I have a hard time doing light colored hair, and especially wings. Mine always look like tattoo style wings. Any advice? Yours remind me of old baroque art work. Very well done...

Dan-Harding In reply to thisguyrocks [2012-11-28 03:48:57 +0000 UTC]

My day job is doing art restoration mainly for churches so over the years I've painted a lot of wings. I haven't used reference for them in quite some time. Plus, I try to stay away from using to much reference. It's not a bad thing to use it but for me I'll start to rely on it to much and I'll get brain lazy lol.
How I get them to look soft is trying not to use to much black. I do a layer of a mid tone gray and while it's still wet I go in with straight white ( I prefer Titanium) and map out some feathers. Tighter at the top and looser towards the bottom. That mixes with the gray so you get a pretty subtle look right off. After that use a bit darker shade of the first gray and outline some feathers. Again starting tighter at the top and getting loose as you go down. Then use a very soft brush ( a mop works well for this) and blend the entire thing so it almost looks blurry. After that I go back in with white and basically start again until I have a good gradation and sharp feathers fading into blended out ones. Sometimes Black is needed to sharpen some edges but not to much. Also, Bending some feathers to add some cool shadows helps give it depth. Hope that makes sense
Thanks for the compliment man! I really appreciate it!

That makes sense, Thanks for the tips. I tend to use alot of dark tones so to me, when I keep something light, it doesn't look finished and I always darken it up which usually just gives it a false illusion. I think I've got alot of practice to do on my wings. I love when Caravaggio did his wings because he didn't usually just use white wings. In the "Victorious Cupid", he used wings with dark tones, like bird feathered wings. But then again, he painted set up scenes with propped wings, so being the realistic painter he was, he would just simply paint what he was looking at. I to do not like to use too much references, I agree, they make you brain lazy. That's a very impressive job, sounds very time consuming. Well, thank you again for the tips. I will do some more sketching I suppose. Keep up the good work man, take care.
