After 30 years of gradually becoming softer and more relaxed; Disney did a darker turnaround- which may have led to some disasters at the time, but it was a step in the right direction to get Disney into territory that could get even darker than the Golden Era. The Fox and The Hound had undertones of the tense conflict of racial divisions with a much more low-key atmosphere; the Black Cauldron was filled with horrifying elements such as the Gwythaints, the Cauldron Born and the Horned King himself and had a underlying dread that accompanied the entire film; the Great Mouse Detective could be fun, but Raitgan's facade of pleasantness hiding a savage side, the bar, and the close up of the bat demonstrate a very threatening world; and lastly, Oliver and Company was dangerous- from its alley dogs, to aggressive guard dogs of gangsters, morally ambiguous dogs as Oliver's friends to the hero and a sociopathic implied gangster, the only shed of decent innocence is Penny and her relationship with Oliver.

Animated films in general that decade would be like that; Rock and Rule, the Transformers Movie, Starchaser, all of Don Bluth’s work...

The 80s were definitely a golden age for darker types of animated films.

Yep, personally, I unironically love The Black Cauldron, one film from Disney that wasn't afraid to show disturbing content. And then Disney pretends like it doesn't exist, until Disney Plus.

Me too. I hope they do something interesting with their planned reboot.

So do I, despite Disney's other remakes they made are debatable.

I really feel bad for the people who worked hard on Black Cauldron, since it lost to the Care Bears movie at the box office.

In my book, The Fox and the Hound is THE greatest Disney film ever made!

The Fox and the Hound and The Great Mouse Detective are really good classics. But the others are... Meh.

Well, I think that the Black Cauldron was my favorite for being the black sheep of Disney despite its' controversies surrounding it.

The Fox and the Hound (1981) is the best! Some people say Oliver and Company (1988) is a unpopular Disney movie.
