Its so odd how Medusa is so often depicted as outstandingly sexy in artworks when mythology explicitly tells us that she's an ugly bitch. Well done for sticking to the original description! I especially like your interpretation of her snake hair...

Wow! I think this is by far the ugliest medusa I've ever seen! I also love the power medusa holds in this piece as well. She is deliberately and easily turning this man to stone and thats something I haven't really noticed in other medusa pieces either.

having her skull open with a nest of vipers coming out is an original take on the concept of Medusa i haven't seen before! fantastic colouring! it really does the job of showing the viewer that this poor warrior is right in the middle of being turned to stone. the figures themselves are of course amazing. she's all twisted and horrifying, and he's utterly terrified! BRAVO!

medusa in all her proper ugliness...! she looks like a waterlogged corpse, which is pretty horrifying to behold. this is fantastic. in so many illustrations, i see medusa depicted as this beautiful sex object, and it goes against the lore of her face and her power.
in this illustration, i hear her disembodied voice, "LOOK AT MY FACE", and she ensnares her victim with absolute horror and the grotesque. i love this. love it love it love it.

How about if somebody was blind, but could "see" using optical sonar? Β They could see her silhouette, but not the horrifying details. Β Do you think they would turn into stone then?

Yes but that is the reason the Greek myth came up with; Medusa's beauty was said to rival Aphrodite, so Aphrodite turned her into a monster (not taking away her beauty) that is cursed Medusa to turn anyone into stone that looked at her to make sure no one would question the true beauty of Aphrodite. In other words Aphrodite is a jealous bitch lol. But this is a really cool take on a classic monster.

that's only one version of the myth. in another more popular one; Medusa was turned by Athena into the monster because she defiled her holy temple and her station of being a virgin priestess by having intercourse inside of her temple. sadly it was Athena being cruel, because the sex was actually a rape by the god Poseidon, but Athena couldn't very well punish him because he only acted as an ancient greek god should. so Athena turned her into the monster and said that no man would ever be able to look let alone touch her. the moral is less obvious to our modern sensibilities.Β

from one smart-a** to another, it's generally a good plan to have your facts straight before you say/post anything. also being more selective about your targets is also a good idea. when you can see them making smart-a** comments already, avoid unless you are sure enough to bet your baby on what you're going to say.

Very interesting interpretation - I know that classically, art of Medusa's face (such as on pottery/etc) was said to intentionally resemble a corpse- widened eyes, bloated face, the tongue sticking out - and I think that your interpretation really brings that across! Β Nice work.Β
