"Let's get Captain Delaney," Ja'vonte said. "She can take these girls in and make sure they pay for their crimes. And maybe get some good information out of them!" "Are we just going to leave them here?" Ja'lisa asked. "They'll be out for a long time, sis! The police station is only five minutes from here. We'll be back long before they wake up." The girls headed toward the door of the dojo. "Oh, we forgot one thing," Ja'lisa said. "Of course!" Ja'vonte replied. They both turned toward their downed opponents and made a deep bow. "Osu!" they both said, performing the traditional ritual for leaving the dojo. "Boy, they sure didn't show any appreciation for our show of respect," Ja'lisa kidded. "Oh stop!" My understanding is that it is a kind of compound of two words meaning, "I am in your debt." Why it is said to the sensei and to the 'god' who presides over the dojo.

I was aware of a different 'compound word' origin that suggested it meant 'pain worth effort' but was 'brutish' in form, and thus not considered polite tongue outside of a dojo.
