Description

Beach babe and surf shop employee Ashley Pearson sprays a fresh coat of epoxy sealant on a damaged surfboard while her friend and co-worker Julia Sanchez watches closely. Even though they're careful to work in an open area with a good breeze for ventilation, the girls are also wearing respirators to avoid breathing any of the dangerous fumes their work creates.

NOTES: I had so much fun with this one! Just don't pay too much attention to exactly where Julia's right arm bends and you'll be fine.

This drawing is something of a milestone for me. First, I avoided wussing out by hiding any of the girls' arms behind their backs, and then I drew all four hands in this image without direct reference to any photo material. I puzzled it all out using nothing but my own hands and mental calculation. So it's not like they're fine art, but considering where I started from I think they're coming along. Breasts look slightly less retarded than some of my previous work, I think I'm getting the hang (ha) of some of the basics. That cursed area between shoulder joint and breasts, however! Still a place where I need more practice.

The girls are wearing something very close to Draeger Panorama Nova masks. Ashley has the good old universal canister filter, and Julia is wearing a very fancy PAPR version connected to a filter on a belt she has clipped into her shorts. I think I've come up with a reasonable technique for recreating the look of flexible, segmented airline hose. The real PAPR hose has about twice as many fold sections as I've drawn, but what the hell. It's detailed enough, it gets the idea across, and there's not enough time in the world for every last tiny fucking detail.

I am practicing letting go, abstracting details, learning where to cut corners for an artful effect rather than a lazy one. To that end, I'm leaving this piece as line art. No shading. In fact, I think my next few pieces are gonna be unshaded line inks. I need more inking practice, and it leaves me feeling reasonably accomplished without bogging me down in too much toil and detail. Gotta get faster, I'm going to be fifty soon!
