I was assuming you use PS to do your pics (maybe I'm wrong).
The masking feature in PS allows you to protect areas of your illustration from change, while you work on the exposed areas.

ah fancy words. the figures were painted on a separate layer so no need to worry about keeping them safe. on the other hand if i were all on one layer, i'd etch out the characters, so to speak, by painting in parts of the background. it's good to keep everything harmonious since light is going to play with everything in the setting. too much separation of the characters ,or any element for that matter , from your background is going to result in something that looks like it was cut and pasted hastily with no regard to whether it appears if it belongs there.

Most of my pieces excludes a background. Next time I have a background in mind, I'll try to make it a part of the whole pic... instead of doing it after the fact.
