This plane was great for close in ground support in Vietnam. Was always happy to see it overhead...

What an impressive beast.Β  My father began his career as a U.S.M.C aviation mechanic working on Skyraiders. He said that if it was not leaking oil, something was wrong with it!

I love this thing. The first aircraft to score an air to air gun kill in Vietnam. Just as impressive was the fact that the aircraft shot down was a MIG-17.Β

Great shot of a thing of beauty.

A fine shot, nicely composed with the prop following the line of the folded port wing. It makes for a nice tight composition without 'cutting off' the wings (although I have cropped into wings myself, I prefer having the whole of the wings in shot). This is one of the benefits of 'Flying Navy'!

Personally, I don't like having too much empty space in my work because when a subject really fills the frame, the image tends to be more impactful. Fitting the entire aircraft in frame, though great for reference and admiration of the subject, often results in detail loss, and a lot of empty space or poorly used space within the frame. As you rightly state, when you can have the best of both worlds like the above image, it's great. But I do tend to crop out wings if I have no other option, because I would rather fill the frame and have that detail.

I agree and it is just a personal preference on my part. Certainly detail parts of aircraft, particularly the close ups of pilots, are well worth having.Β The Skyraider looks great and is one of my favourite aircraft. Sadly I don't think the FAA Museum one is on show at the moment.

I believe she is over the road at Cobham Hall at the moment, which does get opened up for public tours on occasion, but sadly she is not in the main museum at the moment. A shame because AEW variants are extremely rare. I'd certainly love to get a few shots of her.

I'll keep an eye out for her and let you know. A friend and I will be going up to Yeovilton soon so I may be able to ask the question.

The Skyraider is famous for chucking out oil and leaving quite visible exhaust stains. You'll find most examples of the type have similar stains.

Thanks once again The great light helped here. I always prefere shooting at this time of year when the sun is lower in the sky, it makes the light really nice and crisp.
