The Spitfire was modified throughout the war in many ways, and one of those ways was the layout of the wing. The different wings were denoted by a letter suffix after the marque number. So for example, the Spitfire in my image is of the variant known as the "LF.Vc".

The LF part denotes that it carries an engine that was geared for low flight, the roman numeral V denotes that it is the fifth variant or Mk.5, and the all important C suffix denotes that it is equipped with a C wing.Β

Now I know this sounds like I am off the beaten track so to speak, but bare with me. The C WingΒ was designed to be a universal wing, that could allow a combination of armaments. Initially it would have carried four canon, however for whatever reason, many were only equipped with two canon, more than likely for operation reasons. Weight, drag etc. So basically the little stubs are fairings that cover the unused canon ports.

I know I usually like to keep the entire aircraft in frame, but with having a little more reliable equipment this season, I'm finding that I have more keepers and am not messing up shots quite as much. I guess I am just looking for fresh ways to present the 'spare' images.Β

Just keep doing what your doing
Me on the other hand have gotten worse - went to Solent sky on Friday and junked most of my stuff. The place was easier to photograph than Brooklands but I fluffed it - never mind.

I've still never been to Solent Sky and I keep meaning to make the journey down to Southampton. Does the museum have it's own car park? I'm just wondering where the best place to park for the museum is.

You might be pleased to know that I will be making up for my last visit to Brooklands either Wednesday or Thursday. It's my Father's birthday on Wednesday, so I thought a nice trip around a great museum would be in order seeing as my love for all things old and mechanical runs in the genes.Β

Solent Sky has street parking (with a meter of course) Not a great deal of parking but then it never seems that busy down there.
On the three times I have been (week days) I have never had a problem. Time before last was a beautiful day and I popped over the Woolston bridge to the old Β Supermarine site. The slipway is still there and I just sat on it soaking up the history vibes. There is a bit of reshuffling going on again at the moment. Β

I went to Brooklands two Fridays running in May (battery problem on first visit) I love the place because it just ticks all the boxes.
The hanger lighting is a bit of a bugger though. Its about 20- 25 mins away from me so I have no excuse not to go more often.Β
