Trying to get in some good portfolio material for SDCC. As always, this kinda started with an aimless doodle that I ran with. I don't draw women too often because I'm not one of those guys that can pull it off and make them look all sexified and stuff, but I should probably stop avoiding it and try to work on the female form.I was very much influenced by anime when I was younger, and I don't think I want to completely lose my taste for that aesthetic, which is what's been happening as I immerse myself deeper and deeper into the gorgeous world of american feature animation. Guys like Dice Tsutsumi and Paul Felix and Glen Keane have been having such strong impact on my work lately, I think this painting was me shifting towards some of my earlier obsessions. I like what came out of it but there's still a lot meshing of influences to come.
If I'm not lazy, I'll post a step by step soon since I happened to save a bunch of jpegs as I worked on this.
*EDIT* Also, I've been meaning to try to not take my paintings to such a smooth finish and to leave my brush strokes in there a little more. I totally failed in that with this one.

Well thats not a fair fight at all... no wonder he missed. Turned out freakin awesome man. I love all thedifferent textures you played around with in her disign. I think You could have incorporated some of that into the guy, just to make him pop a bit more. I agree, from now on there should be afemale character in evrything you do. I dare you.

you're probably right about the guy. The truth is, by the time I got to him I was exhausted with this pic. I also still didn't know how much I was going to blur him, so I didn't want to spend time rendering some crazy texture only to have to smudge it up for speed.

Love the slanted angle you've chosen to portray the composition in, adds to the dynamism of the scene and the character's expressive poses. Really nice way you've rendered the girl's body amour and I think you've done a nice balance between the "sexified" aspect and actual functionality of it. (Seriously why does the comic book character of Red Sonya even bother with a chainmail bikini? How does that make any kind of sense?) The motion lines of the blind man's sword are just superb and pulled off really well. My only critique would be that after doing such a great job on the floor's perspective and the out of focus elements to the left the scene loses some of it's sense of depth when the eye travels over the pillars but I am not skilled enough to suggest how you might overcome this issue. I think it's really just a shading issue and that they just do not feel completely rounded despite the excellent marble texture you've put on them. Dam fine job on this one, sir, you rule.

hey thanks for that man. I agree with your critique, though I'm not too sure how to fix it without making it not look like marble. Hmm, when I better understand how light bounces off of that material, maybe I'll come back and add some changes.

Fair enough. Just wanna say, the pillars aren't really that detrimental to the overall impact of the image. It's still a visual pleasure to behold, well done.
