Hello! You asked for an honest critique from #thephotographyunion so here goes e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

I like the idea you have here. The angle of the shot is interesting and with a bit of work would be pretty cool!
My eyes immediately go to the blown out building on the right and then slide down to the underexposed train. You have a very challenging lighting condition here. It would probably help to expose the building properly and dodge out the train in Photoshop. There seems to be plenty of detail in the train to be able to do that. However once you overexpose the building you loose detail. I think this could be a really cool shot with a bit of work.

Hmmm..I'll confess a few things here..First i'm working with a point-and-shoot, so I can't manually adjust shutter or aperture. Nor can I look through the lens to see what's over exposed. I do have an SLR, but it's film, so I gotta wait to see if that shot came out properly. Second, I don't have Photoshop. (I use Picasa, which works well for me for the most part.) Lastly, I didn't even notice that the building was overexposed. It's a white facade building getting hit with bright light on a sunny.

But enough with excuses. I'll do some re-editing tonight, try shooting it again sometime and we'll see how it goes. Thanks for the critique!

Oh, and I do honestly like that the train is so dark. That bit was on purpose. Should I really be docked for that?

Yep point and shoots do make it hard. I am looking at the image from a calibrated monitor so I probably see it differently than you do But like I said it is a cool shot And of course you should not be docked for anything intentional As far as software goes. Picasa is fine for very basic edits. I use PS but I have been told that [link] this is a really really good free editing software. Try it you might like it

Ai-yi-yi! I have GIMP, but it's confusing as heck to use! A calibrated Monitor? That's new to me.

I have never used Gimp. LOL Did not know it was that complicated I know of lots of people who swear by it.
Yes monitor calibration is huge!!! It is the only way to know if you have true correct color and density! If you have a lab that you use sometimes they will have a profile you should use. If not a color calibration tool is wonderful. We use the Pantone Eye One [link] However there are other ones out there. It is a worthwhile investment! Here is a link for more information [link]

this has enspired me to go back out and look again at some locations in Sydney to create shots with a similar feel ... great shot BTW

...with a lovely view of Trump Tower in the background. It's better looking than Willis Tower, but it's no Tribune tower or Empire State building.

It's a great shot, of a great city. I love how Trump's building is framed so perfectly in the background. Nice with B&W. Great job!

What can I say? Its a great shot. I haven't learned the tech-side of photography (yet!) , but to me its a clearly defined, sharp image. The perspective is nice, looking towards Trump Tower.

Your shots make me want to move back there

I just recently lived in Lakeview. I had to move back home in Mich due to a severe illness and subsequent financial issues.
I was living off Belmont and Broadway till July of 2010.

Sorry to hear that. MI is nice I hope. I am planning a trip to see an old friend in Ann Arbor next month.

Belmont & Broadway is not bad. I live off 45th & Ellis.

Critique from

A great cityscape I've never been to Chicago, but I think this captures the feel of any city, really. So great impact here, its an eye catching photo.

The 'geometry' of the shot is also brilliant. The straight up and down of the buildings works nicely with the diagonal lines of the tracks and embankment. I love the contrast between the brightness up high on the buildings, and the darkness down on the train and on the streets, but I feel that the buildings may be a little overexposed. Maybe a smaller aperture or different metering mode could have blanced out the exposure a little.

Otherwise, great shot Kudos!.

Thanks. As I explained to the other critique(r), I was using a P&S. (My only digital camera) I can't manually adjust Aperture or shutter. Basically he said the same things. I'll likely be submitting a newer photo of the same style soon, so we'll see what progress i've made.

Kudos to you as well.

Beautiful Scenery. I heard that Chicago is a noisy city, but somehow this pic feels silent and calmed to me.

*pun intended* Oh, you HEARD right. Chicago is indeed loud. Thanks, though. "calm" wasn't really what I was going for, but this wasn't a particularly loud day.
