I hate it whenever this happens to me. Really I do.

I get this each and every time that I try out the "new and improved Pepto Bismol flavoured milkshake" at McDonald's.

A bout of purply-pink puke.

By the way Mr. Daniel-san ... I am most glad / proud / happy for you with regard to the HUGE response for your "The Babysitter" painting.

YOU DESERVE IT.

Now, go and get "Juxtapoz" magazine here in the States to do and interview / article / retrospective of YOUR work. I sincerely believe that they will / shall be interested in your work.

Take care my friend,

Brent

Thanx, Brent!
Haha... Yeah, it's insane how "The babysitter" took off. I never would have expected that for that painting, but I guess it's also because it's Donald and everyne can relate to it. Combining that with what I actually did to it, it might not be so strange that people react to it.

Juxtapoz...
Yeah, I did send them an e-mail when you first told me, but I had no response yet.

Take care, Brent, and thanx again for all of your support. It means alot!

No problem. No problem at all.

Yeah, I think that you are correct about the Disney tie-in.

People can relate to something as iconic as Donald Duck since they've been groomed since childhood about all things Disney related.

Send Juxtapoz another email (or maybe have others begin to bombard them with emails) about your work. Persistence will pay off in the end for you ... I sincerely believe this.

Take care Daniel,

B.

Wow... I love this. I don't think it has gotten nearly enough praise. I love the concept and execution. It is artists like you that inspire me to keep making art! I have neglected it for years until the past month... I'm still trying to figure out to use digital media correctly. Your work seems to have a certainly personality that mine is lacking, I love it.

Thank you!
Some people have an uncanny natural talent for painting/drawing, while some of us have a moderate natural talent but alot of persistence and passion. These last 4 years I've been very active and I've come to learn how much it pays off if you just keep at it. I try to challenge myself when doing one piece, just to give myself a break on the next one and just have fun. SOome people seem to believe that you have to be inspired and motivated, and that that feeling just comes to you, but I believe that you have to be very disciplined and just practice as much as you can. If a sketch is turning into shit, don't give up and wait for better days, just keep going and going until finally you find a way to make it work.

Years have went by and I haven't done so much as a sketch... for the past month I've been challenging myself to do at least one piece a day. There have been some noticeable improvements in my work. I would be honored if you would critique some of my work and give me your opinion.

I wanted to do another digital painting tonight... but the entire lower half of my screen is now covered in dead pixels... I mean it's completely black. Sooo... until I get a new laptop, I'll be focusing my efforts on traditional media.

DanielKarlsson In reply to LePoubelle [2012-02-29 01:39:17 +0000 UTC]

Critique? Well, I'm not one to do that usually. But if you have a specific pic and trouble-area that concerns you, then please don't hesitate to ask for tips.

I believe that if you master traditional media, then it's easier to get into the digital media. But if all you know is the digital media, then you you'll have a hard time translating that into tarditional. I think that it's good to use everything.

I just started the transition into digital media a few weeks ago lol. I've really only ever worked with greyscale and pencil and paper. I don't have a very strong foundation in color theory or value. Which is what concerns me. The feature piece on my site is probably the best digital painting I've done in my opinion. Mainly, I want to know what tools you use in your digital pieces and which ones would be good practice in traditional media. Right now I'm a struggling free lance artist... lol.

What software do you use?
Regarding traditional media, you have to try different things. Maybe you'd prefer watercolors? Or maybe you are more of a pencil-artist than a brush-artist? There are many different categories within the traditional media. that have very different approaches and techniques to them.

Ummm... I've been using Corel Painter 11. I just upgraded to Corel Painter 12, I've only been using 11 for a few weeks... and 12 for a day.

DanielKarlsson In reply to LePoubelle [2012-02-29 02:13:47 +0000 UTC]

Ok. Well, I mostly use tinting's basic round and blender. A few different airbrushes, some paletteknife and some burntool also comes in to play every now and then.

I'll have to keep experimenting! I'll be sure to give those a try, I'm unfamiliar with pretty much every tool in the program, I've been trying to experiment with some and do a piece entirely out of a new type of tool every now and then to see how it works.

DanielKarlsson In reply to LePoubelle [2012-02-29 02:33:06 +0000 UTC]

That's a good strategy. I just have a really hard time getting out of the comfort-zone of certain tools.

Disturbing...
I love it. Everything is great: composition, color, everything. I usually don't like digital, because everything seems so perfect, so soft. But this is amazing, it's wonderful.

In parentheses, I'm suprised to see that somebody have used the word "cute" to describe your work. Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing your audience with ill intent, and I respect the opinion of everybody, but "cute" is the last word that I would have expected to see in a comment about a grotesque painting of a creature vomiting lavender juices, next to a lamppost.

Thanx! I know what u mean about how digital stuff can look kinda flat and "perfect", but I use Corel Painter and not photoshop and I don't use the airbrush tool that much. You should look up a guy called Mattias Snygg, he has a way with the digital media that is amazing and it really looks rough and not so exact while still maintaining lots of life and emotion.

Oh, I do think there is a cute quality in there somewhere. It's just hidden amongst the farting and puking.

I love the dual lighting. So much emotion in this piece, dramatic lighting makes it so much more intensified. (Love his hands.)
