Description Digital, Corel Painter

Another portrait in my portrait series. Since this one wasn't a commission I took some liberties with this one and experimented a bit.
I'm currently open for commissions on these kinds of portraits, but it's mainly for the practice that I do them.

fantastic video. Nice use of the smudge tool. I often envy your ability to do characters.

Thank you! It's funny, you pay almost 400$ for a painting software that contains hundreds of different tools and endless customizing-capabilities, but you end up using mainly two tools.
Oh, and I ALWAYS envy YOUR abilities to make lanscapes and enviromental pieces.

The thing with environments, or at least for me, is the more brushes you use, the better. I try the same with creatures and characters but it usually fails. Your video kinda brought me to light with that.

Well, it makes sense to have lots of different brushes when making environments in order to create a broad variation of differents textures. But one can do that with people/characters as well. If you haven't seen Mattias Snygg's work before, then check it out via the link:[link]
He manages to do faces and characters with ALOT of different tools, and it really has the feel of traditional painting and a nice loose flow while still capturing the essence.

I've seen many artists like Mattias, and I certainly envy their style. Granted I will admit it's probably the "grass is greener" syndrome. No artist seems to like their own work lol.
Have you heard of the Digital Painters series? The first volume has about 36 pages that cover brushes and how they are used in different situations. It's a flippin awesome book. There are about 5 or six volumes. It's like an encyclopedia for digital artists. If you haven't read them, I highly suggest you check them out.

Well, as an artist I always want to assimilate more knowledge and skill, so seeing something that I don't quite understand or master myself makes me feel a bit limited. In fact, often it makes me feel like I suck, but froom that I always end up getting more motivated.

Digital Painter series? No, I haven't heard of it, but from what you are telling me it seems like it's worth having a look. Though, I'm sure I'll have some kind of anxiety-attack from realising how many tricks and methods I need to learn.
Thanks!

Yep, I feel the exact same way. I get upset if it takes me more than an hour to learn a technique. Sometimes it gets to the point where I just want to grab my crayons and walk home, but then I realize, "Oh wait, I'm still alive, there's still time to figure this out."

I don't normally throw down money for art books as they usually disappoint me, but these were totally worth it. I've read through the entire first and fifth volumes. That too is a surprise because I don't read often either, lol!

Hmmm... I'd love to have them all, but they're quite expensive, aren't they?

crap did I call them the digital painter? The series is actually called Digital Art Masters. They're like 40 bucks each, which considering the pages and printing quality, is a really good deal.
