In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update .

What's New

Username Changes Now Available

DeviantART has been around for almost twelve years, and in that time, we've seen artists grow from hobbyists to students to professionals. As a member of any community, your identity can change and grow over time.

For years, we've been getting requests from the community asking for the ability to change usernames. We realize that as an artist, it's important to give you the ability to change your personal brand, just as you change your interests, skills, and art types.

This week, we added the ability to change your username in your Settings . To change your username, you must have an active Premium Membership .  (The reason there is a "fee" associated with the change is because switching usernames is a complex technical process that can create confusions for fellow deviants.)

Improved Journal Widget

The Journal widget on your profile can now be customized to display one long entry, multiple short entries, or one long with the rest short.

There is now a pencil menu on the corner of each Journal you publish, making it a bit easier to edit your Journals without having to visit the Journal's page and then clicking the "edit" button.

Bug Fixes

General

  • Journal Skin installation is now a one-click process! Simply click "Install to Journal" and you'll be taken to a new Journal using that Skin. Added by $muteor
  • For a period of time, items that are removed from the cart page were still stuck in the cart at the end of checkout.  Fixed by ArtBIT
  • There was a short-lived outage of the deviation storage system. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Various issues with the display of literature and journal thumbnails were reported. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Browsing deviations in your Message Center using the "next" and "previous" buttons was limited to the current page of thumbs. Fixed by muteor

deviantART muro

  • Discovered an issue with playback when Brush strokes were too short. Fixed by mudimba
  • The "save as" operation was optimized. Fixed by mudimba
  • Fixed a bug allowing deviantART muro to still work if the drawing couldn't be loaded.  Fixed by Nodren
  • Some deviantART muro thumbnails went missing. Fixed by sgrahamUK
  • Improved error detection for network issues. Added by sgrahamUK and  mudimba
  • Some duration statistics were incorrect. Fixed by Nodren
  • Identified a rare edge case with when drawing could not be loaded and deviantART muro was not working.  Fixed by Nodren

Sta.sh

  • It wasn't possible to delete descriptions on stacks for a period of time. Fixed by adahacker
  • Deleting all but one item from a stack and then going back to Sta.sh broke the page. Fixed by adahacker
  • Clicking "submit" without first closing category picker did not work. Fixed by adahacker
  • For a period of time, deviations with no descriptions displayed "click to add description" for other members. Fixed by adahacker
  • Journals could sometimes get removed from "my journal" when edited. Fixed by adahacker
  • The login page didn't always detect if cookies were disabled. Fixed by adahacker
  • Using cmd+click on items in stacks didn't select them. Fixed by samshull
  • The "friends" button on the "send note" popup was broken. Fixed by samshull
  • Deleting items sometimes resulted in a phantom "deleted content" thumbnail in Sta.sh. Fixed by samshull

Sta.sh Writer

  • Muro recordings can now be embedded in Writer. Fixed by Alisey
  • Fixed some issues where Writer didn't save when the subject and metadata was changed. Fixed by kemayo
  • There was a case where clicking into Writer would empty its contents. Fixed by kemayo

Your Feedback

In last week's discussion, we received some great feedback on our discussion questions. Feedback included:

  • Collaborative drawing features in deviantART muro were a very popular idea.
  • Many deviants would appreciate the ability to switch between a simple and advanced group management system.
  • Some deviants would like the ability to toggle whether or not journal skin changes were retroactively applied.
  • Some deviants would also like additional documentation on Journal Skins and related features. From ~Nironan12

Bugs, issues, and feedback from previous Site Updates

Discuss!

Last week we received some great feedback on Group affiliates and member management. One of our discussion questions this week is groups-related, while the other is related to the visual display of signatures:

Group Discussions: How do you feel about the admin discussion forums on Groups? We've seen a lot of members attempting to have conversations using the comments on a Group's profile, but would you like to see a discussion forum feature specifically for these types of discussions?

Signature Visual Changes: Some members suggested that font color of comment signatures should be a bit lighter, making it clearer that it is not part of the actual comment. It's also a possibility that emoticons and avatars in signatures could be slightly faded out. What do you think?

A few suggestions I have: I'm not a huge fan of the new thumbnail size for favorites. Maybe a way to change that for personal preference are in order (either as a premium member or a generic member.

Also emoticons: eye-roll (maybe 8-} ), and somehow creating a bow\curtsy icon.

I've had some consistent issues with the comment sidebar emoticons. I can usually tell someone I love the deviation. but joy and wow are among those I can't figure out.

If it's a bug, can some site guru fix it, and if it's just me, can someone explain what I'm doing wrong?

I think that their should be a section in the toolbar/tab thing at the top for current contests held by dA as well as the latest site update

why can't you select what section of your work you wish to preview, some work is difficult to assess based on the thumbnail size currently available!

for example i may only want to show people the face in the thumbnail but when they click on it they can see the whole body.

I'm not sure whether this has been suggested before, or whether it could be taken in consideration: could it be possible to make it so deviations aren't "duplicated" between original deviant and groups in one's Deviantwatch?

I watch a load of artists - as my dA is some sort of inspiration bookmark for me - and a load of groups; it will often happen that I'll have a considerable chunk of my messages duplicated between the notification I get from the original artist who posted their artwork and the group which featured it. Most of the time this happens instantly. It can be nice to be reminded of a piece of art which gets featured a few weeks or more after the artist has submitted it to dA, but it looks a bit untidy in my opinion when I have the same deviation in the artist's stack and right next to it in a couple of groups' stack.
Perhaps it could be done so that individuals could set their own preferences: if they don't mind it at all leave it as it is; if they do they can decide how many days (with a maximum, I guess) there have to be between an original submission and a feature in a group (or more groups...) to have the piece of art re-submitted to their deviantwatch.

For Sta.sh Writer documents, I noticed there is no option to add a picture thumbnail like we can do with HTML documents. This would be very convenient for people who write using Sta.sh and want to illustrate their stories.

When you're editing the widgets for your user page, at the bottom where there are widgets you can add, the 'preview widget' and 'add widget' buttons are all the same color, so it's very confusing. it'd probably help if they were made separate colors.
(I thought they were different already, but I checked just now and they aren't. So unless it's just a glitch or something, changing the colors would really help. Thanks.)

It would be nice to have a "delete deviation stack" button inside the stack itself, instead of having to go back to the messages page.

I have a suggestion that may have been brought up before... the ability to swich the backround 'deviant-green' to black.... because if there are thousands of people logged on every second, it could amount to a lot of power saved. like, how youtube made it possible on earth day. I`m still in the dark about why the fonction was removed... is it like, difficult in the server or something?

I have an inquiry of sorts not relevant to name changes or journals, so here goes:

I change my group's avatar regularly(every week), and I was wondering if I have the right to use ANY deviation that a deviant either submitted to my group or approved to be in my group, at my request, as the group avatar; or do I still have to ask permission and wait for them to respond yay or nay, and in some cases, don't reply at all!?!

I understand the reason behind only premium members getting the option to change usernames. But if it really is that much hassle to make the changes, why do i see some of these premium members simply changing their names to include a capital letter? That's really stupid, imo.

Hey danlev, I have a suggestion.

When you watch someone, is it possible that we could also be alerted with who they favorite or watch as well? It would let other deviants know who they like faster than going to their favorites.

Thank you for all of these updates and I hope you look into my suggestion.

Dear everyone complaining about the fee for a "simple" username change:

Please consider that when you change your username, all the links to your current account, deviations, gallery, etc. must become invalid, because your username is a part of their URLs. If you change your username, all those links will have to be changed or redirected somehow if everything associated with your old username is going to become associated with your new one instead, and in a way that doesn't disrupt other people's use of the site. I don't know how the guys behind the scenes are going about doing this, but it doesn't sound so simple to me. Somebody has to get paid sooner or later to make sure it goes off without a hitch.

I believe people should get paid for the work they do to provide a service, whether that work is obvious to anyone or not. I ask you, who's the more elitist and entitled, the worker who thinks they deserve compensation for their time and effort, or the consumer who thinks they deserve to have whatever they want without paying for it?

Oh, and there's the part where they straight-up explain in the post that "The reason there is a 'fee' associated with the change is because switching usernames is a complex technical process that can create confusions for fellow deviants," emphasis mine. Did y'all miss that?

Assuming their site is structured in any way sanely, your actual username is a single value in a table somewhere, and the table would (in a sane infrastructure) have a second field in that table that is the actual value linked with other tables in the database.

Read up on relational database design. It's only been en vogue for 20+ years now. If changing your username requires significant technical work on the backend, it's only because they've designed their site poorly, not because there's a legitimate reason for it.

Neshomeh In reply to mynameisbear [2012-05-22 23:51:15 +0000 UTC]

I'll own up to not being knowledgeable about database design, but as such, I'm inclined to believe the people who actually work on this site when they say what is or isn't complicated for them. Whether another designer thinks it's sane or not isn't relevant, since it doesn't change what is true for this situation.

You may be entirely right—I don't have the technical expertise to argue on that level—but then again, there may be other factors in play neither you nor I are aware of, since we don't work for dA and don't have access to their systems. The only fact I'm aware of is that they say it's tricky, so it doesn't make a lot of sense to me for people to complain based on how simple this process is without being privy to what is actually going on.

'Course, if you're suggesting dA is lying to us, that's another issue entirely.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mynameisbear In reply to Neshomeh [2012-05-23 16:49:18 +0000 UTC]

It might actually be tricky, sure, but if so that's only because it's architected poorly, not because we lack the technology as a civilization to make username changes (even on very large, complex systems) trivial.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Neshomeh In reply to mynameisbear [2012-05-23 19:12:19 +0000 UTC]

Since we're talking, maybe you can explain this: how does the fact that your username is actually part of the URLs for all your stuff get resolved in a name change in your ideal system? If I've got a deviation of yours fav'd, but you change your username, how does the link get fixed so I can still view and click on the piece I like from my faves? That's the part I guessed causes the problem. If a page or file moves to a new URL, I can't access it with the old one unless there's a redirect involved, but I can't imagine they'd want a trail of redirects if someone change their name a lot; or perhaps maintaining all those trails for everyone who switches their name is the reason for the charge. I dunno, I'm just extrapolating from my own experience on the web here. Is have your username as part of the URLs for your stuff part of what you mean when you say the site is architected poorly?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mynameisbear In reply to Neshomeh [2012-05-23 20:21:16 +0000 UTC]

Your URL changing (and thus external links to your page, or links that are not being dynamically generated, no longer work) is nothing they can fix, but internally speaking (in a well crafted system) the web application infrastructure doesn't save fixed URLs internally, but generates them on the fly. So, the server's data structures for your gallery wouldn't have just a list of links hard coded and saved (which would then need to be changed en masse, potentially requiring some noticeable amount of disk and CPU time, if your URL were to contain your username, for example.)

Hypothetically (and I'm going real minimal with the explanation here,) on the back end you have two-column table (called username, maybe) that has an auto-generated rowID in the left column, and their current dA username in the right column. Then, you have another table called profile with two columns (probably more but we're not dealing with them right now), one called AccountID (which is an internal-only value, ideally never seen by mortals) and another column called UsernameID, which is not the actual username of that profile, but rather the rowID of the associated row in the username table.

Using the magic of relational table design, the web developer uses database statements in appropriate places to join the two tables together and return the actual username of a given profile. If references to this table are made in every place that requires a username to be displayed or used, then changing someone's username for the entire site requires that you change a single username in a single table. The practice of organizing all the database fields and such this way is called normalization, and it's the cornerstone of relational database design.

For what it's worth, I don't think requiring premium and charging a $10 fee on top of that is outside the realm of acceptable, and I don't need them to justify the price to me any more than I need Blizzard to explain why moving to a different WoW server costs $25; as I understand it the process consists of little more than an automatic export of your character in XML format, which gets put into a temporary holding area till a Blizzard staff member approves it for sanity and then it gets imported into the destination server. Why do they charge $25? Well, primarily because they CAN, but I'd imagine it's also because it discourages people from transferring servers on a whim.

For a variety of reasons, I think that changing your username SHOULD require some sort of actual investment, and $10 to change your name on dA is just enough money to discourage people from doing it casually, but not enough money to make the cost a serious barrier to anyone who REALLY wants to change their username.

Okay, that does make sense. Thanks for taking the time to explain. {= )

Nice to know we don't actually disagree about whether charging for a username change is reasonable, which is the main thrust of what I wanted to say. For the record, my bias here is that I work in customer support, and it does wear on the spirit a bit to have one's benefactors accused of being evil money-grubbing elitist whores (and worse) every time something money-related changes. I have to bite my tongue and be nice at work, so it's a relief to be able to speak freely on the subject. And hey, now I've learned something!

I think it's completely unreasonable that you need to have a premium membership in order for the name change to be effective. Yes, it's only $5, but there's a reason the term "starving artist" exists, and it's an incredibly elitist idea to think that we should have to pay for something as simple as changing a username. So many features here on dA are already restricted to premium members only, so please reconsider this decision and make it available to all members, regardless of site status.

There's a lot of other stuff that be only do by preemium membership. Can't the change username at least be free?

I agree. Sure, it's only $5.00, but this idea of forcing people to buy a Premium Membership just so they can perform an action as simple as changing their username is just plain absurd.
People SHOULD be outraged at this sort of tactic the deviantART staff's using. There is NO reason why you have to pay up to become a Premium Member just so you can change your username when dA gets their funding by running multiple advertisements and selling their products. It just isn't right, at least from my viewpoint.

I just wish that the premium membership money that I've paid for years could go towards having more reliable uptime - I'd prefer that over being able to change my username! At least half the time I'm on dA, I can't even load thumbnails. After being here for 10 years now, the thing most likely to lead me to quitting is the issue of being able to access the site reliability.

As a premium member, I like being able to change usernames, and think that limiting it to premium members isn't such a bad idea - otherwise you'd get every second 13/14 year old changing it when their mood changes, and I would much prefer not to lose track of some of the kids I watch. They change accounts often enough, usernames would be worse!

Please dA, work on the basics working reliably. Ultimately they're most important.
