Description Fairy Tale Refugee
12x20, oils on board
Created in 2006, prints available on website

This image has turned out to be one of my most popular print sellers. It tends to outsell some of the more dramatic “male” fighting and political pieces. I had made a conscience decision to make some more portrait based work, tackle the human subject and paint a face. If you notice in some of my earlier work, I was always masking the face, hiding it altogether, covering it in cloth… and even here, I couldn’t just paint a straight face, she is hiding under her own hands, and the dreamy cloth is encapsulating her from the outside world.

I do believe lots of effort was put into this. Perhaps, it is the detail and outlook of the hands and skin that fascinate me.

The vibrant colors of the fabric and the great tones to the hands really make the piece. The feeling is great too. Really wonderful.

I came to this by `laurart 's journal feature.

I love this, it's so claustrophobic and intense and I like how the subject looks as if there experiencing both of these emotions

Cools.

I think there's a rather stunning softness to oils. I've always wanted to paint with them because I think they'd help me to make more tangible flesh. You certainly used them well, despite 'masking' the face. One thing about this that I'm particularly fond of is the hair. Maybe I'm just a sucker for well-done hair, but the style of it really lends itself well to the fairy feel.

It's quite an attractive subject to paint and I can see why it appeals to people.
You did a great job with it
