Description Today on WebUpD8 I saw Audience, a new minimalistic video player.

It looks pretty promising, but I feel like the visual design really needs to be tightened up. So, I did this quick mock

edit: wider, added sidebar.

Hopefully this or something like VLC will be implemented in Elementary. VLC's compatibility will be a huge bonus.

Looking pretty good! I think the "window frame" should be 'squared' in all corners, rather than having the top two corners rounded, but that's a OS change. Anyone know where I could provide a mock-up for that?

I don't like the sidebar as it is now. I think it should be darker and less obtrusive. Maybe next to the window in white-on-black? Also, remember: you can't round the corners without letterboxing, and you can't keep them pointy, and you can't letterbox it. Lose, lose, lose situation. I hate those.

The seek bar needs to have a fixed width. Dragging the seek bar handle gets awkward when you have to drag it across big screens.

Audience seems nice as a single-file "previewer" a la Sushi. However, for those who have large video collections, the best bet would be a video library. Something like Beatbox but for videos. Someone in dA suggested naming it "Theaterbox", since both programs would be related (music videos would be playable by both, for example).

CAUriel In reply to ArkBlitz [2012-03-19 05:50:58 +0000 UTC]

I'm personally not too fond of the "library" apps, they usually end up bloated with features that I'll never use. (I've never ever used a photo manager software, my music player is gmusicbrowser with the most minimalistic settings you can get etc.) So for me Audience is pretty much the ultimate video player, if it would mature a bit.

ArkBlitz In reply to CAUriel [2012-03-20 03:18:25 +0000 UTC]

So you manually organize music in folders and drag them into GMusicBrowser? Same for e.g. Totem or VLC?

Pretty much.

Yea, I agree that a real video solution would also deal in terms of a library and possibly subscriptions as well.

KevinKleinman In reply to DanRabbit [2012-05-29 20:42:58 +0000 UTC]

Who ever said Audience can't have a tiny little button that takes you to a library? Just the click of a small button to get access to a whole new dimension.

This next line is going to be extremely laughable but you did know that porn sites actually have thumbnails that show a couple of frames of the movie? There may be something to learn from that, though I wouldn't dare recommend anyone to "take a closer look" at the idea. xD

But you've got to admit that was some clever thinking from my side.

... I think I would better shut up now. :3

If the video is playing under the titlebar, it should not have rounded corners. Important pixels are being lost there! (Well, not really)

Why let the film show behind the title bar? Then why you're not watching it fullscreen you won't see that part of the film :S The bottom bar I understand since it will probably slide away.

DanRabbit In reply to nsrosenqvist [2012-03-08 18:02:45 +0000 UTC]

Why not fade out both the bottom bar and the title bar?

nsrosenqvist In reply to DanRabbit [2012-03-09 08:55:38 +0000 UTC]

Well it would be a cool effect, but not very consistent with the rest of the user experience... I don't know really what to think about it x)

the titlebar is maybe hiding itself automatically when your mouse is not on the window :/, otherwise I agree with it being a problem

I've tried Audience, it's impressive though obviously still in the early stages of development. You're right though, the UI elements do need some improvement, in particular the iconography. The above would be an excellent endgame for Audience, although I'd be interested to see how you would style the pop-out playlist.

Also, I like how you've extended the video playback under the window decorations. Is that even remotely possible though? Also, does Audience fit into your earlier conception of dark/black window decorations for 'pro' applications, or did you choose dark/black window decorations for purely aesthetic reasons? Either way, it looks nice. Not sure it would work as well with the light/grey window decorations.

DanRabbit In reply to Anubeon [2012-03-08 18:09:04 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I downloaded it the other day and it's definitely a mess (at the very least).

Probably not without the window providing it's own window decorations, unfortunately.

Well, no I think we have to consider colors based on content types and not necessarily the skill level required to operate. Yes black brings up connotations of Adobe's Pro apps, but it's also traditionally used for video players and photo viewers because of the type of content we're viewing. That's why I went with white for the sidebar is because of the text content that is viewed there.

Anubeon In reply to DanRabbit [2012-03-08 19:42:28 +0000 UTC]

Ahh I see, sort of a dark room feel? I guess that makes sense. I look forward to seeing where this goes. Although, as I alluded with respect to your recent Shotwell mock-up, I think too much 'dark' can be overpowering/oppressive. It'll be interesting to see if your future designs in this vain can change my obstinate and immovable mind on this.

DanRabbit In reply to Anubeon [2012-03-08 20:12:55 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I'm not quite happy with what's going on in the Shotwell mockup. I too feel that it's a bit too much.

Anubeon In reply to Anubeon [2012-03-08 09:08:01 +0000 UTC]

Whoops! Should have refreshed before posting, seems you've added the playlist in the interim.

How about some subtle transparency for the playlist too, such might tie it in with the other UI elements (although, I suppose the playlist is supposed to be summoned only for short periods of time, so maybe not appropriate.).

Ha, I don't know. I haven't really tried it out, but it sounds like it has a lot of issues. If there's a stable release out in time then I don't see why it can't be considered
