i did the patches and everything, but every time i apply the theme, the aero scheme crashes...

Why don't you upgrade to windows 7? Most of the anime themes these days are compatible with windows 7 and 8 only and a few for XP. If you are upgrading to windows 7 never upgrade to windows 7 starter because that edition windows 7 doesn't allow you to change your wallpaper even. Try using Windows 7 ultimate(it's good)
