The man's eyes swept around the meeting room as he stood behind his podium, shuffling his papers.
"Now," he said, "let's get back to the issue. We need a new business logo, because the current one isn't working out. Who here does digital art?" After a few seconds silence, a small voice spoke up.
"I do." With the voice, a girl stood up. She couldn't have been more than twelve or thirteen. The man laughed, a deep, mocking laugh.
"We have no time for your games in this meeting, young lady. You shouldn't even be in here. This is private." He gestured to the security guards near the door, but before they could move, the girl spoke again.
"I came here because it's 'Bring Your Child To Work' day. I have every right to be here. And this is not a game. I am not six, and don't like being spoken to as one. I bet I can draw digitally better than any of you in this room." She held her head high, eyes daring anyone to challenge her.
The man was astounded. He hadn't been spoken back to in a long time, especially not by a child. His anger rose. "Well, if you're better than any of us here, come prove it. Draw us a picture. Any picture," the man snapped back. He stepped back from the podium, clearing the way to the iPad that controlled the screen behind him. "Go on."
The girl bravely stepped up to the podium and picked up the stylus. She expertly navigated her way to a drawing program and immediately started on a sketch, which quickly become lines, which quickly bloomed to color.
Murmurs rippled through the gathered crowd, and the girl's mother was beaming with pride at her daughter's skills. By the time the girl was done and stepped back from the iPad, a white wolf was running across the screen, breath billowing from its mouth, ice-blue eyes brilliant against the night sky behind it, dotted with stars. Frost glittered on its pelt, and snow flew from beneath its paws.
The man was silent in the face of the beautiful work. Slowly, all eyes turned on him. When he finally spoke, his voice was low.
"I am sorry I underestimated you. Your skills are obviously fantastic. I would like you to design our new logo." The words were peppered with submissiveness, acceptance, and awe. The girl smiled and nodded.
"Of course," she replied. Then, quietly, leaving the wolf on the screen to continue to awe people, she sat down beside her mother. She knew the man would never underestimate a child again.
