My thoughts on the BSA's policies regarding homosexuality...Apparently one can not be a good scout, as well as be gay. Yet I've
managed to do so my entire time in Boy Scouts. Earned Life Rank, as well
as become a Patrol Leader. Yet somehow, I cant be a good scout because
of my choices? Hardly...

I understand the reasoning behind refusal of homosexual boys in the troop.
Because Boy Scouts is generally an all-boys organization. Think of it, I personally won't like tenting with someone with a different sexuality than me for a week at summer camp.
By joining the Boy Scouts, you're supposed to live out your life by the Oath and Law, of which the Oath states to be "morally straight". So, in reality of a good troop system, being gay won't get you past Tenderfoot rank.
I'm not hating on your or anything, I respect the fact that you are/were a fellow Life Scout.

I mean... scouts should respect any kind of diversity on races, religions, sex, politic ideas, sexual preferences, countries, ... so... naaaa I don't believe it!

I know many gay scouts and here nobody really cares cuz it depends on the person and not his sexuality.. we're scouts, we make peace! but not this shitty prejudices!

Thats is cool, Im a life too. The BSA is conservitive, that is agreed, and it be wonderful if the troops could act independently instead of being regulated by a higher authority. The BSA is a great program, so hang in and get your eagle! I will too!

Even though i am not homosexual, i have many friends who are. I am also deeply involved in the scouting community and am even in Venturing, a co-ed program. I have heard many of hte horror stories about boys being DENIED Eagle rank because of sexual preference, i heard one heart warming story about a boy who waited till after he got Eagle and then came out. I do however face a similar problem, i am of the Pagan religion which have also had just as many horror stories in scouting, because it's not a polytheistic faith. I fear i will loose my rank as Crew President if i let anyone know about my religion.

I acheived my life rank as well, and I also got to SPL. I was in scouts for over 10 years (cubs/boy scouts combined) I believe it is a great experience, and sexual preference has nothing to do with wether or not you can become/are a good scout. It should never even come up until you are almost out of scouts anyway (unless you are a leader, although this should be regardless unless you are a pedophile, but this is a different case entirely.)

i was in boyscouts for a while to. I hated it, but I gusess you liked it. I got up to life, and my dad kept pressuring me to finish my eagle, knowing that I am gay. Luckily He let my quit, but he's still not okay with me. Come see my DA site! mucho arte!

*gets on soap box* I myself am and eagle scout and gay. I've left scouts becuse of there statement that being gay isn't moraly right. My big question to BSA is whos morals are we going by??? Jew, Christain, budist, Muslim...... they all say the other is going to hell becouse they don't belive the same as them. Its also amazing to thing that straing people thing that gays molest boys. I've found its straight, married, blue coller males that get off on the power trip, but straights won't listen. *gets off soap box, for now*

I have to say... Youve managed to do something with this photo. I've been trying to figure out how to express the same emotions. I spent 14 years with the BSA, from tiger to Eagle to Assistant Scoutmaster for a year. I makes me sad that now I try to avoid the BSA like the plague. Not that Im resentful, but I think some of the guys I was close to wouldnt understand.

nothing really against gays, i myself am kind of uhm..... stuck in between. but it does clearly state in the bible that homosexuality is wrong.
i think that it was wrog that gays were kicked out of boy scouts, i myself am one. but maybe if the gays could make their own troop? whats wrong with that? that way the other boys would be comfortable, there among "members" (sorry couldnt think of what to say)

The problem with that is as I said below, we would be doing just the same thing the BSA does, except reversed to exclude hetrosexuals. The answer is not in more exclusion. Accepting and loving eachother is the way to go.
As for your precious bible, It is a 4,000 year old document, that has no relevance to modern times. So don't take everything it says as truth, or even righteous.
For example the bible says not to eat meat off plates that have had dairy touch them. This rule was made to prevent people from getting sick from mixing the two products. Now, we cook things well, wash our dishes, and keep our meat and dairy refridgerated, so there is no need to uphold those rules.

how can you say that it "has no relevance to modern times" untill you have read it and understand it? there are many relevent things in there. like not killing people for instance? or would you rather go around and just shoot people?
and as for your "no meat with dairy" example, what part did you get that from? the old or new? also, what religion (if you claim one) are you? you have to take what the Bible says in context. you can't take it out of context because the meaning may be intrerpreted as something else.

thank you for your apalogy, and i accept it. i also apologize for my reaction. i sometimes can get a little touchy. i know my religion does not like homosexuality, but it tells us to not like the "deed" but like the person. i know sometimes its hard to seperate those two... but we all make mistakes.

I would not call it a mistake, however. It is a natural thing, no one decides to be gay, it is just something we are born as. What we do decide is to accept our homosexuality, rather than deny it.

I think gay people should make thier own country, it would be called homonia, and it would be completley environmentally friendly, weed would be legal, healthcare would be free, there would be no speed limits on the motorways and all types of religion would be against the law!

Thats defenitly folish, to think that we would ban straight people from a country. We would be doing just the same thing many other countries have done to gays. And what about children?... our population would never grow unless we adopted, and we could not be certain who we adobt will be gay...
So yes, foolish, stupid, not correct to exclude any group of people like that. Besisdes, diversity is a good thing. We need to mix, and learn from eachother, and realize we are all individuals, not nessecarily represented by the larger 'group' we are part of.

I agree. Me, personally I was a boy scout at one time. I even got my EAGLE. After all of that the leaders started to finally notice something after I had gotten my eagle. I know it's rather devious of me

I was also a life scout/patrol leader...
but I also had a couple affairs with a fellow patrol member on various campouts.

That actually reminds me of that south park episode.. big gay al was removed from being a scout-leader for being gay, and his replacement was a pedophile. I think people look too much at preconceptions then they do at anything else... The next time someone tells me something is wrong, I want them to tell me why. And if they site "because" or "the bible says so (or other religious variation) Then I want them to tell me why they are right.. Unfortunately, it won't help much, knowing fanatics, but what the hey...

I think what they've done is utter bullshit. So you're gay, you may not participate or enter the in the following:
Boyscouts, girlscouts, workplace parties, bachelor parties, strip clubs, resteraunts, clubs, bars, friends' houses, your house, pet stores, music stores, malls, Wall-Mart's.. and so on and so on.
