Page 144, Fig. 3.3 excerpt from A College Student’s Guide to Dormitory Dragons:

"Dragon Scales

Dragon Scales are notorious as being both noisy and needy. They are attracted to individual musical instruments according to their subspecies--the Percussive Scales are particularly loud--and are known to follow their Keepers home from recording studios, music halls, and practice rooms. Once attached, they are nearly impossible to shoo away. And while they have occassionally driven their Keepers crazy, most Maestros admit that insanity is a small price to pay.

The tiniest species of Dorm Room Dragons, Scales' social groups tend to be the largest in numbers if not size. They flock in family groups called Compositions, and the longer they stay with their Keeper, the larger the groups will grow. The grand classical music minds of the past and present have had vast Compositions of many Scales subspecies inhabiting their homes.

Potential Keepers should be warned that Scales will need multiple sheets of paper in order to nest and thrive, and they are not adverse to helping themselves to bills, napkins, or Christmas cards if their Keeper does not provide enough blank sheets. Soon after the eggs are laid, Keepers will hear tiny notes being chirped from the pages, indicating that yet another series of Scales have been born and are demanding music from their Keeper. Play or be pestered by musical-minded Compositions of tiny Dragons flitting about your ears."

Just came across this randomly looking for renderings of dragon scales. As a musician myself and all around appreciator of creativity I just wanted to say I really like both the illustration and the explanation too!
