Description -

------------------------------------------------------------------------

About:
On my evening stroll. This was a mum with her about ten year old son, driving by on a little pathy thing nearby. Amazing, how many people where up and about today!

Manipulation:
Turned black and white. The colours were lovely sunset hues - but they were just too cheesy. I think it's beautiful how the lines of these mountains come out in b/w.
Colour is overrated sometimes.

Variations:
In colour
Panoramic cut

"Juxtaposition" - another word I've never heard before in my life! What school is it you're doing? It must be something quite clever, cos normally I'm the one with the extravagant vocabulary. Good to learn something new though!

And thank you.

Juxtaposition means when two random objects work very well together

I know, I looked it up.
I love words. So I look up every new word, either in an English-German translator or in a dictionary. Juxtaposition just sounds great.

Yep, mountains are a great thing. I love them too, and this view is right from our garden patch. I think I'd feel a little forlorn if they weren't there.
I just saw you live in Canada, you guys have lovely mountains too, ain't it?

What a wonderful view :}
Yeah, we have some lovely mountains. From my house you could see the mountain range just beyond the ocean. It was a gorgeous sight during sunsets.
Ooh, Switzerland. I've always wanted to go there.

Mh, looking out over the ocean. That's something I can only dream of. *-*

Well, if you ever come here, tell me beforehand and we can meet up. I'll show you some of the most beautiful/coolest places around here.

I grew up in a small coastal town on the West Coast of B.C. It was quite the nice place. Of course, I never really gave it much thought until I moved, haha.

That would be lovely. It won't be for quite a few years, though, haha. I plan to take a year off after college and go somewhere. I haven't decided yet, but somewhere.

Okay ... I know this puts me at danger of exhibiting my lack of geographic know-how in a very embarrassing way ... but what does "B.C." stand for?

It's often like that ... you don't realize what you've got until you lost it. I always complain about certain swiss characteristics, and I say I'd love to emigrate ... but in my occasional more intelligent moments I realize all the things that make living in Switzerland very comfortable, that I'd definitely miss if I moved away.

Where do you live now?

tetsuyayamatashi In reply to dareme [2008-04-22 00:09:15 +0000 UTC]

Haha, no. No Problem. British Columbia, Canada. It's on the west coast of Canada. I'm down pretty pretty near to the American Border.
It's exactly like that, haha. We had the most gorgeous sunsets in my old town and it was only right before I moved that I really noticed them. I swear, Mexico and Hawaii sunsets were ugly compared to ours.

I'm still in British Columbia, but now I'm on Vancouver Island. It's basically the same area, but an island, haha. It's more urbanized here, as well.
Where abouts in Switzerland are you, if you don't mind me asking.

I'd love to visit Canada one day. It sounds like such a fascinating place.

I live halfway between Zurich (our inofficial capital ) and Zug (where the rich folks live). I'm in the German speaking area (we have four different languages that are spoken in the country, German, French, Italian and Roman).

Why did you move? Just cos you wanted to get away .... or for a job or school or something?

tetsuyayamatashi In reply to dareme [2008-05-15 06:41:38 +0000 UTC]

I have to say, that unless I move to Europe, I have no plans to leave Canada (B.C., specifically). I really do love it here.

Oh, yeah. I recognise those. Augh, I need to go there sometime. Maybe I'll save up for a few years, haha. One day.

I moved for school. But honestly, it was also to get away. It was a small town where you knew everybody and everybody knew you and nothing ever happened. But, over all it was for schooling :]

Yeah, true.
It was a really spontaneous shot, no time to get anything out of the way, or they would have been gone.
But looking at it afterwards I thought, too, that it somehow added personality.

Glad you enjoy it!

This if by far my favorite photo in your whole gallery. Sure, you have some great pictures, but this one is just something else. It looks like a scene from a movie or an old National Geographic photo.

My most sincere congratulations for this wonderful photo, it certainly deserves a lot more comments and faves

I think there's a lot of art here on dA that would deserve much more attention. I believe if you keep creating beautiful work, one day, luck will be on your side and popularity catches up with one.

farcry77 In reply to dareme [2008-02-26 09:45:07 +0000 UTC]

Thats nice too. In the colored version there should be more contrast. B&W it does not show much as a issue

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dareme In reply to farcry77 [2008-02-26 15:46:51 +0000 UTC]

I agree about the contrast. But it's real difficult ... the mountains tend to vanish into nothingness.

"B&W it does not show much as a issue", what do you mean? I don't get that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

farcry77 In reply to dareme [2008-02-26 16:09:35 +0000 UTC]

B&W photography is dramatic. It does not really rely upon accurate contrasts and exposure. So in the B&W shot the contract is not an issue. But when it comes to color it shows

CatchMe-22 [2008-02-25 05:07:52 +0000 UTC]

that's one great capture olivia... and the B&W brings out the complex layers that can be distracted by colours if u didn't convert it. It's beautifully composed too... the only suggestion i have would be to crop the bottom and top and have a panaramic picture... i think that would work quite well as the top and bottom of the shot does not really add much to it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dareme In reply to CatchMe-22 [2008-02-26 09:35:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm thrilled that you like it!

I agree that the top and the bottom don't add much. But somehow I feel that the panoramic cut completely changes the balance of the picture, neither to the better nor worse - it's just different.
And I quite like it the way it is here, even though there is an awful lot of black space in the bottom.
I uploaded a panoramic crop here . What dyou think?
Maybe it'd better to crop off less in the bottom ... but that still looked weird, plus it resulted in a really strange format.

I love this photo for some reason I can't explain. And I totally agree with you on the color vs. b/w issue. I'm sure this had lovely colors (and I *love* sunset colors), but the b/w brings out the lines and the light/shadow contrasts, and sometimes that's all it takes to make a great photo (like this one).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dareme In reply to Lazy-Cat [2008-02-24 22:49:18 +0000 UTC]

It's really good to hear that you agree with my b/w-decisions.
Sometimes when working on a photo I become too obsessed with it, I'm so into doing stuff to it that I forget that it's not about "doing all you can" to the photo but "doing as little as you have to".

However, if you're able to see my point even without having stared at it for longer than is probably healthy, it means I'm not loosing my mind after all. Yay! Time for champaign!

Glad you enjoy the photo.
