Description

Done with Speedball ink, Hunts pen nibs (107, 104 and c-6) inexpensive brushes and spattering with discarded old toothbrushes on Canson vellum surface bristol board. And a blue pencil.

Many, many times over the years I have heard people making the comment: "Isn't pencil so much better than pen?!" expecting me to totally agree with them. I try to be polite and not answer, but the true answer is:

No.

No I don't. Not at all. Not in the slightest.

This picture is a prime example of what I mean by that. Look closely: pencil can't do stuff like this. Maybe from now on I can whip this picture out as my answer to the question.

I am trying not to be snarky about this, but I wish to point out that I get tired of constant and repeated put-downs of my favourite medium. It gets frustrating for me when the answer is: calm down and practice practice practice.

Most people have tried pen only once, weren't an expert with it in five minutes or less, and then feel awful about it. Newsflash: no human being can be an expert at anything they've done only once and only for five minutes. (I was awful when I started!!) Stop trying to do the impossible and you won't make yourself feel bad about it any more.

I think my point is made, and it wasn't snarky at all.
