I love your fully rendered graphite portraits else where in your gallery, but something in the simplicity of this piece really stikes a chord with me.

I guess one of the reasons is the freshness of the linework. Areas of particular interest is the way that you did the necklace, and the improvised areas of the head covering!

Many times, sketches retain a vitality and personality that get lost when a more sturctured medium is placed on top. So often, I hate to ink my own work because the ink has a tendency to make everything regimental.

Very nice, indeed! Looks like a fave to me...

thank you very very much for this thoughtful comment! this is a personal fav of mine as well. many people don't like working with ball pen, but i think using pen enables the execution of really clean lines. and since shading with smudging is not an option, it really helps practise how to use lines to depict light and shadow, and i think that's one thing in common with inking, which you really excel at.

as for the loss of vitality, i think that's just the difference between sketch and full-fledged rendering. since most sketches are fast, the motion of the strokes itself helps create a sense of vitally.

i still need to try inking, which i have been avoiding. it seems to involve a whole lot of pain staking work, but i really admire and like the feel of inked work. it can both achieve a crispness that's incomparable, and it can be quite flowy depending on the artpiece. and i think the whole "restrictiveness" of the medium make it even more precisous!

This is really good I like the face and the expression and the kinda rough texture of the pen but the skin sumhow looks smooth, it's really good!
