Thanks, I love working with this deep blue, it functions as part of the dark shadows and just glows with a intense value!

The composition is incredible as well... the blues have inspired me to use in a painting... this is wonderful. I added your news article to my faves to read when I'm feeling better.. such great advise you share. Thanks

Thanks.. I will show you some finished works. I'm trying to blend abstract with realism, purely traditional painting technique studies. It won't look like yours... but you have inspired ideas for sure. Thanks and I'll keep watching your work.

Thats great! Ive been trying to figure out a way to push myself into more expressive pieces but still keep some realism but I havent figured out the path for me to do it yet.

Actually this is done with Stabillo CarbOthello pastel pencils. I rarely use conte because it stains the paper.

I love the simplicty of this - the limited palete, the duskyness of it - but yet the light still glows through.

I was suprised to see it was on blue toned paper - on the thumbnail, it seemed like you'd coloured the background/put the tone in yourself.

Fab work, as ever..

I love the darker value blue paper, its a bit tricky at first because the paper value sits in the shadow range and not the light range. As a result you have to do alot of drawing with the white chalk but its a fun technique

what a brilliant technique! it must be interesting working on paper that is the mid-tone, not the dark or the light.

I'm still very much a student so if I'm way off just ignore me

Your comment "the challenge to drawing on this dark value paper, is that it only represents the shadow halftones not the light, so you have to add in so much of the light tones with the white chalk." seems incorrect to me.

You did a wonderful job using the paper as a mid-tone, so don't think I'm insulting your skill. But, I don't think that using such vibrant white is necessarily the only way to get the effect of the light. I'm thinking of some etchings Rembrandt did where almost the entire scene is appears to be blackened out, and even the light source is very dull. Color is lighter/darker depending on the colors around it, so what would it look like if you left the dark blue paper as the highlights?

Darkdesyre In reply to FackinNinja [2008-02-29 14:35:05 +0000 UTC]

The way I use toned paper is to let it be a substitute for one of the values. So in this case the actual value of the paper is quite dark and fits into the value system of the darks not the lights although I have "cheated" a bit and let some of it show in the lights. Because the blue value is so intense it also functions well as the reflect light in the shadows

But that is just how I use toned paper. Rembrandt's method only works for a low key drawing, not a medium or high key one. If you let the dark blue paper function as the highlights, you would need to push the shadows to be quite dark and charcoal cant produce that dark of a value. You would have to switch to conte crayon or nupastel sticks to get that dark black value.
