It can do the digital painting, but many of the custom brushes that people develop here wont work with 4.0.

Thanks a lot this really helps. I always felt I was using the wrong brushes, and never could use the hard edge brush.

I applaud on your patience for sticking out something like that without a tablet, I think I laid my brush down once in Photoshop before I got myself one.

I thought I'd tell you in case you didn't know, that using the smudge tool for blending in it's basic form looks pretty uggly compared to the other options, even though it's probably less timeconsuming then color picking without a tablet. Even just using a custom speckled brush can help you get rid of it's hallmark texture and greatly improve the finish on the artwork.

You can easily make one yourself, or pop by at Linda Berqvist's site site to download the brush she uses.

Thank you so much for the tips.. since I mostly paint traditionally with oils, painting in the computer is not something I spend alot of time on. I never color pick from the model, I just use color that I would if I was painting by hand. I find most of the time I pick a much brighter/intense color then the eyedropper would give me. So if you dont blend with the smudge tool what do you use? I also add a noise filter to the work when its done to speckle it abit but it doesnt show up unless you are looking at it on my screen

Ill try the brush site... do you have a link to it?

Glad you found my comment helpful .

What I meant by color picking, was blending with it, not picking from the original photo, I know that's just boring. Here's a link to a tutorial I used when I was starting up on digital [link] This is pretty much how I still blend when painting. Basically you lay down the colors you want and then use a low opacity brush to achieve intermediate colors between them, color pick them and keep going until you have a smooth transition. But this is extremely timeconsuming if you don't have a tablet.

[link] has tutorials by Linda Berqvist, she uses the speckled brush with smudge tool to blend, the link to the brush is in one of the tutorials. I tried it out and the results are pretty neat, it's quicker to get a perfectly smooth blend at least, but somehow I never really incorporated it into my workflow. I guess it felt a bit too "digital", laying colors next to each other feels so much more painterly! And that way it's also easy to leave visible brushstrokes for the effect.

No problem, I remember how hard it was to find something useful when I tried to learn Photoshop .

Try this [link] for the first tutorial, and just browse to Tutorials and check out the one called Basics of Painting in Photoshop or somesuch.

I got my fine art degree at Arizona State University (complete waste of money). I have also studied drawing and painting in Florence Italy in the classical tradition. As for my computer art, I am self taught as a necessity of being an illustrator in the Design industry for over ten years. Some things you just figure out on your own by having to do them

Whatever the case may be, I think you are a terrific artist and probably a great teacher too, but I get the feeling you are not too thrilled with ARIZONA as a whole. I think I once saw you post it is a cultural wasteland. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Yes we dont have much of an art scene here, but I do have a great circle of artist friends. Thank you for your confidence in me as a teacher and artist, I love what I do and try to teach my students everything Ive figured out over the years! Im trying to post some tutorials for my students and the DA community as I get a chance too.. but I literally have months and months of demos I give my classes to convert !

I usually work from a drawing Ive done by hand and scanned in, but this is the method I teach to my students since many of them dont draw by hand
