Why not?We have Tails and Metal Sonic confirmed in Episode 2. A final battle with Super Sonic and Super Tails fighting against Metal Sonic would be awesome, wouldn't it?
So, I created this little matte painting.

Part of me wonders if we will EVER see Super Tails / Hyper Knuckles again, or if Sonic Team is stuck in their super-hedgehogs-only mentality.

I don't see hyper characters coming back. But Super Tails or even Knuckles is definitely a possibility.
Imagine if the next major 3D Sonic game features an other character besides Sonic....I bet they will somehow make use of both characters in the final stage. Either in Co-Op or by letting us switch between the two super forms (similar to Generations with Classic and Modern).
But I have to admit that I would be surprised to see more than one playable character in the next Sonic game

Sonic Team just has to realize what made Sonic 3 & Knuckles so epic for it's time. Getting all 14 emeralds and getting rewarded for it no matter what character you played was awesome. Every character had a different power in their super forms.
Another part about S3&K's longevity was the replay value. Every character could explore a different part of the level, and not too many know this, but their abilities outside of super forms was a bit different as well. Tails was a hair slower than Sonic and Knuckles, and Knuckles couldn't quite jump as high as Sonic and Tails. This little tidbit of knowledge game to my attention when I used a debug code to fight the Death Egg Act 2 boss as Knuckles.
Probably one of the hardest bosses I have ever fought from the classic era. Avoiding the Master Emerald laser required nearly perfect timing.

Exactly my thoughts!
Sonic games nowadays are way too short. They lack replay value (I'm not a fan of Time Attack Modes in games) and longevity.
Giving us at least two playable characters with different abilites and giving us the possibility to explore different parts of levels would really add to the length of the game and make it way more fun compared to the newer games.
And getting 14 Emeralds and unlocking new character forms or even new levels would only make the games even better.
But let's face it: SEGA is already struggling with issues like control problems or camera bugs etc.
The gameplay feels too automated because they want to avoid glitches like in Sonic 06.
This has to change first before we see another "huge" and "long" Sonic game, I guess.

Hmm...
1. Super Tails needs more power to go Super. Sharing it with Super Sonic wouldn't happen.
2. Personally, I've gotten tired of the automatic "gold fur, red eyes" design that's been given to Super forms. Silver got away with it, but giving it to Tails and especially Amy is tiresome.

I just made Super Tails look the way he looked in Sonic 2 and 3. Plus red eyes (which was my choice since Super Tails has yet to make an official appearance in the modern era).
