Description
Jayde stopped to listen to the last remaining echoes of her scream; they slowly disappeared into the abyss that was beyond her reach. Her longing, hopes, wishes, and mostly her heart had gone into that scream. She hadn't known what the purpose of it was, whether she wished for everyone to know her pain, or perhaps she wished someone to answer back with their own screams of pain so that she would know she wasn't the only one who was damaged within her body, heart, and soul. Despite whatever she was hoping to happen the only thing that answered her was the whisper of the wind and the silence, that ever-imposing silence that ate at her soul. Another scream gone to waste. But she did not know what was worse; that she had wasted a perfect scream or that nothing had happened. Depressed beyond her mortal control she gazed over the edge of the cliff and for a fleeting second saw herself falling down headfirst into the oblivion the dark mouth of the caverns below held for her, but then it was gone and she was still standing where she had been, untouched, unharmed…well at least physically she was fine. She turned wishing that she had the strength to do it, to end her own life so that she could finally be free. She had tried three times but something had saved her from death as she sat there rocking herself back and forth with her gashed wrist bleeding all over her pillow, the same pillow she slept on each night. Her parents didn't even know about any of the three times, she doubted if they even cared sometimes. Walking away from her chance to die was one of the hardest things to do, even if she couldn't end her life she found that just contemplating it helped. Planning every detail made her feel as though one day she would have the strength the power to do what she dreamed of so often. As she began to walk past a weeping willow she stopped to look at it, smiling genteelly up at its drooping leaves and branches. Something about the tree caught her interest and she was overcome with the feeling that she should climb up it to the top, to see if she could make it. It was an unspoken challenge to herself and she found that it was one that captured her soul inside it and she wanted it with all her soul, every inch of her body desired to climb that tree, to show it that she could make it up to the top if she wanted to badly enough.
With that she was starting her way up the side of the tree, scraping her hands and knees and feet along the rough bark, she wouldn't give up that easily she would fight to make it farther. She grabbed a branch and as she put her weight on it found that the branch wasn't as strong as she had thought at first, it snapped and she felt the fear grip her as her body was tossed downward. She had been so close, she thought as she looked up at the top of the tree. A tear escaped her eyelashes as she fell into the branches, smiling up at the cruel irony. No matter how much she desired to reach the top something she did, some mistake would knock her back to the ground.
She hit the ground with a sickening thud, like a moist towel hitting something. The breath was knocked from her and she stared up into the branches of the tree seeing spots moving around in her vision. She couldn't make it and she couldn't end it. Her pathetic try to climb the tree to prove to herself that she wasn't incapable of achieving what she longed for so fervently had only backfired. She was nothing and she now knew that was a certainty. Suddenly a face loomed above her, silhouetted by the sun above. He spoke softly, dreamily giving his hand to her, before she could think about it, she was taking it. He helped her to her feet and brushed the foliage that clung to her body, twigs in her hair, leaves on her back. By the look that filled his eyes she knew this man had witnessed her trial and her failure. He had been present to her humiliation. She went to turn away ashamed that he had seen into her unguarded soul but he grabbed her into his arms and held tightly. Her tears came forcefully and with an innate cry she clung to him. For a moment they stood there as if there was a moment in which both knew the other past and present and perhaps future. He held her hand and helped her up to the top of the tree, reaching the top he screamed into the air and looked deeply into her eyes. She smiled and screamed the same scream as she had earlier. He had heard her and he had a scream similar to hers. They sat up in that weeping willow tree telling each other the stories of their lives, relieved to finally know that they weren't alone anymore for there was someone who shared the same pain. The stars shone brightly in the dark violet sky. Together they helped each other down and hugged each other goodbye. Turned different directions and never saw each other again. Jayde never looked back, she had no reason to, the pain had ceased but she knew that if it were to get bad again she could come to this place and scream into the frosty air and she knew he would come to her. Because she would do the same for him. They were in a sense each other's mirrored psyches. Two in the same and that was something that no pain could take away from them, not even death.
