Jack grew up on Earth and joined the Terranic forces as soon as he matured. He had alot of interest in flying and studied everything he could about it, additionally, he loves to repair old things.
However, his eagerness to explore new things blocked his career path really quickly. He to stole a space fighter jet, because he wanted to explore Earth's system without the boundaries of his superior.
Unfortunately that adventure was short lived.

The Federation needed alot of skilled pilots though, and since Jack was one of them, he got to choose between piloting a space destroyer on the outer edge of Earth controlled space, or prison.
You could probably already guess what he chose to do.
The white band around his right pectoral fin marks him as a convict, he's not allowed to leave the destroyer without supervision.

Also his room is a literal mess, his roommate was replaced by books, maps, globes and all sorts of scrap he bought off alien scrap dealers.
Even he himself is a mess.
