Description Looking through some old sketchbooks the other day, I was reminded that my work was never quite as bad as I tend to remember it being. I thought this, at least, deserved to be seen. I think it's about three years old, so excuse the dodgy bits.

It is of course Odin on his trusty eight-legged steed Sleipnir. I worked very hard to avoid the old 'stick some extra legs on a drawing of a horse' method, and actually thought very hard about where the extra legs would need to be in relation to each other so that the horse could actually practically and realistically use them. In the end it involved making his body bigger and longer than a normal horse's to accomadate the extra muscles and shoulder bones. All a bit of a nightmare at the time, but it looks okay.

Pity Odin himself looks about as intimidating as a soggy piece of bread. Still, I reckon this could form the basis of a pretty darn good full-colour Photoshop pic one day...

Perfect! That's how I have always imagined Odin riding Sleipnir! Seriously, it's amazing!!!
The Gungnir is a bit short indeed, but who cares? Your work is beautiful, congrats! *_*

very cool but outa curiousity was you thinking of drawing a sword instead of gungnir? the haft on the spear looks a bit short

I think I always meant to give him his spear... but in all honesty I can't really remember!

It's like a much better version of an art project I did for school. XD I had them in a similar pose... but mine is crappy XD good job. I love the Norse mythology characters...

Ta. This is only one sketch that I did for a whole project on Norse mythology. It's probably the one that came out the best, though.

'about as intimidating as a soggy piece of bread' .... I don't think so. He's so much better than what i could scribble down and call a viking.

Sleipnir is very impressive! The legs and shading are amazing..

Ah, thanks. I think he annoys me more than he otherwise would because I worked so hard on Sleipnir.

Ah well, i think it looks amazing! You could always tweak it if you wanted, but i think this is good enough.

I just have to say this is awesome. The muscle tone, shading and detail are jaw dropping.

It was very much worth it. I sat here and stared at it for well over 20 minutes. XD

You're kidding! Really?!

This image is now about four years old, so it's probably due for a return visit at some point. Full colour, and a new rider, for a start. But that would all require me to get off my arse and actually do something, which doesn't happen often.

ChePan In reply to DarkJimbo [2008-05-09 20:31:35 +0000 UTC]

I'm not kidding! It's unbelievable! I love it!

Lol, hey, I'm the same way. The stuff I have on my profile is just simple, not my real stuff cause I am to lazy at the moment to finish it all. XD!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkJimbo In reply to ChePan [2008-05-09 21:35:07 +0000 UTC]

Ha, yeah, the stuff that makes it into my gallery is only about a third of the stuff that I actually draw - because the other two thirds of my pics are never finished!

Nice job on Sleipnir! I painted a picture of Odin on his fathfull steed but couldn't figure out how to draw the horse with eight legs without making him look goofy. Great rendering.

DarkJimbo In reply to Wolverat [2007-03-15 10:42:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, my aim in this was basically to depict Sleipnir as accurately as possible without, as you say, making him look goofy. Pity about Odin.

sleipner looks great, the extra legs look believable and the shading is very good

Odin looks a bit like a cliche, mostly because of his helm.. the shield looks a bit out of place as well. But I'm glad you drew him with a spear and not a sword

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkJimbo In reply to Tattersail [2007-01-24 19:10:17 +0000 UTC]

I agree totally about Odin (apart perhaps from his helm - like it or not, that really is what he wore) it's the most dissapointing drawing of him I've ever done. And he doesn't even seem to be sat properly on Sleipnir, but the angle I chose to do was bloody terrible.

Ah well. It was really Sleipnir I did the hard work on, and I'll try and sort the problems with Odin when I give this a long-overdue full-colour overhaul.

Thanks for your comments!

Just like the Vikings wore horned helms, right?..which they didn't But then again, you can't really know for sure about the gods

But you should work on his legs, they seem very short.

and you're welcome

DarkJimbo In reply to Tattersail [2007-01-24 20:56:26 +0000 UTC]

Of course they didn't wear horned helmets, neither did they wear winged helmets - but Odin, at least, did. It's right there in the Poetic Edda - a helmet plumed by golden eagle's wings.

I'd never draw say, valkyries or anyone else with winged helmets, it'd just look silly and cliched like you said - but Odin gets to be the exception.

I will indeed - last night inspiration struck, and I'm starting a whole new series of full-colour pics of the Norse gods, because frankly it's been far too long since I drew them (and I've yet to really do them justice).

I won't say exactly what the series will be, but...

a)It's inspired by this very piece.

b)It will rock.

I'll be sure to check in one you once and again so i don't miss it

I have some Norse artwork too if you care to check it out(some of it is old and needs to be redone). It would be interesting to see what you have to say about them. Just to warn you, I do believe I have a Valkyrie with a horned helm...kinda shoot myself in the foot there
